Opinions? Could this mark the beginning of an actual movement, or is it just some college kid protest that will amount to fuck-all? Is the system too far gone to be repaired? Do we, as citizens, still have a voice in our government? Or has that voice been drowned out by corporate dollar signs?
http://occupywallst.org/
As far as my opinion? I think we are on the brink. A teetering point, so to speak. The next few years, IMO, are what could make or break humanity. We are at the point where, if nothing is done, then apocolyptic type conditions will reign free (complete income disparity, utter destruction of earth making it near uninhabitable, 2 income classes: the ultra rich who run everything and those who have nothing at all, etc.) or another enlightenment where true humanity is sought, the welfare of people is what is thought of instead of how much money can be made on the backs of others.
That is not to say that the change is imminent, or that it will happen over night, but I feel that if we continue on the path we seem to be headed, turning back will be close to impossible.

I don't think it's getting the desired effect though. There are videos circulating of the Wall St. employees sitting on the balconies, sipping champagne and laughing at the protestors.

In order to make the 1% take notice you have to hurt them.
More importantly, I think we need the rest of the 99% to realize what is being done. They need to realize that the people they think have their best interests in mind, don't.
We've been fed the "american dream" since childhood. One where everyone can become a millionaire. Everyone can "make it", just so long as you work hard enough. We've been told to strive for just enough to get by: a spouse, two kids, a dog and a house in the suburbs. Be in debt for life. Take loans out for cars and houses you can't afford and pay on them until you die. It's time we all realized that is a pipe dream.

What's really sad is that that horrid despicable concept of robo-calling potential voters actually works.
Of course it does. Think about it. Get inside the mind of a random american. One who doesn't follow anything outside of their own little circle. A typical american, if you will. You go to the voting booth because you're a red blooded american and it's your god given right to vote! (but god never said anything about studying the ones doing the politicking). Who do you vote for? the guy you've never heard of? Or the guy who's name you see plastered everywhere and whom just called your house...because he obviously cares.

(not directed towards you, fearandloathing)
There, IMO, just are not enough people suffering in the USA yet
That's it right there, IMO. And I really hate to sound alarmist or like some kind of conspiracy theorist or some shit, but until the shit bag is on YOUR front door, why do you care? As long as you still have your comfy job and your house hasn't yet been taken away, why should you care? Why should you take stock in anything that happens outside of your little world because, let's face it, you've made your little world and they tell you everything will be fine as long as you keep paying your bills on time and maybe take another loan, why should you care? They tell you that the people who are up in arms are being un-american. Those people are "FUCKING LIBERAL COMMIES!"
Now, be a good little american and shut up while you give me them freedoms. You aren't using 'em anyways.

That' a good point. You also have to look at who is actually doing the protesting and who is getting interviewed. How many people get arrested and maced at Tea Party rallies?

I deleted a whole section of my first post that dealt with this. It's hard for me to separate "stupid voter" from "voter who does not vote like me". This is probably difficult for many of us. I would hope that this thread would not decay into partisan politics, but instead focus on a better system that actually gets our voices heard no matter what those voices are.
You would think that a majority of the tea party type people would get behind this particular movement. Hell, this movement involves EVERYONE who isn't part of the 1%. However, I can almost guarantee this WILL come down to, and be viewed as, a liberal/progressive movement, and certain individuals won't see past that arbitrary line.

Re: Goobermental Change by EVOLUTION!
Many many times they have not been shown on "lame stream" media, even when they have orders of magnitude greater participation than tepid TeaPee'er orchestrated rallies.
This is refreshing and encouraging to see on main stream media news ... this means a significant media consciousness level raising imho. We here in our local group have been encouraging the protesters, especially the ones dedicated to non-violent protest (in the Gandhi\King tradition).
Which are being seen in main street america homes, where champagne is a luxury they haven't had in years?
I can't attest to how this is being portrayed in american "main stream" media, because I don't follow it one bit. I've gone so far that my 7 year old son knows that we absolutely do not watch fox news at home. I even have to correct him when we watch local new because the local foxz station is one of the better local news stations. He says "No way, we can't watch fox!". I have to keep telling him the difference. I can only imagine in my wildest nightmares how this is being portrayed on national fox news.....

I hope it matters, but how many of these protesters, do you suppose, have ever written a letter to their Congressman?
What is that supposed to mean? I know I have, only to be met with "don't worry citizen, I know more than you and trust me, I have your "best interests" in mind". I was basically told to fuck off.
But the average American still has quite a bit to lose.
I know that, which is why I also said that it won't be overnight. The scenario I painted is where I foresee us ending up is some real change doesn't happen soon.

Re: What George Said
So the tea party is FOR corporate bailouts and banksters running away with this country? The tea party is FOR massive income disparity? Corporate personhood where the richest of the rich run the country and the rest of us are left to beg for scraps?
If I didn't know any better, I'd say you must be a millionaire.

Re: That Will Fix Them
A lot of other countries have mandatory military service.
Finland, Norway, and Switzerland, for example, all have mandatory military service (conscription). I also think it would be a good idea, as long as there is good regulation. I know for me, my service was a real eye opener. I don't think I would have known what I do had it not been for the military. It forces people to think outside their own circle, if only due to being forced to interact with people who are different.

I just feel it should be voluntary if you are going to serve in a combat role.
That's a good point that I didn't consider.

Re: Voluntary Public Works Programs
The BIG question though is: does national service HAVE to be military?
The countries I named, for example, offer alternative service and not just military service.

Re: What George Said
You do realize this movement isn't about left vs. right, don't you? Do you hafve anything at all to say about the movement itself, Ocupy Wall St. in particular? I am desperate to hear your evidence based opinions about this sort of thing, especially given your science credentials.
