Re: What is up with EvC and what do we do?
One of the things that attracted me here was the ”whacko’ topics started by non-experts. I used to love reading these posts and then sit back and admire responses from classy posters such as Edge, Joe Meert, or John that systematically [objectionable content deleted] of what these whackos posted. It was very educational, hell even I read the science topics. It is too clinical here now, EvC’s soul has gone.
Um...thinking...hmmm...Ich bin einverstanden.
But, it is also entertaining when the real experts provide real scientific responses to these guys, I looked forward to lunchtimes when I could have a cup of tea and read EvC, but now all it takes is a five minute browse and I switch off and go read a book.
yep, yep
I would be willing to bet a lot of these posters are bored to tears because topics need to go through a screening process before being promoted.
Well, as long as someone's going to say it, I'm at least going to acknowledge the affinity I'm feeling for what he's saying. I think I'll just stand over hear near Brian and whistle and look at the ceiling.
I still look at EVC. I don't have time to post. However, I've never really had time to post. I have six children, for heaven's sake! I posted, because it was irresistible. I posted because things were written that demanded response; that had to be torn apart; Chivalry demanded it!
That doesn't happen much anymore, so it's easy to resist and spend my time on a very interesting offline life.

Re: What is up with EvC and what do we do?
I did not know it was new and I did not know that before it was a "free for all" in which anybody could post anything. So I guess these posters are saying, just let anybody post anything, no controls at all. And let them curse eacn other out if they want to.
Was that the way it was in the past?
No. People posted whatever crazy ideas and arguments they wanted to post. If the ad hominems or the cursing got out of hand, then the moderators stepped in. Problem people who constantly repeat themselves without listening to multitudes of clear refutation were occasionally banned if they were also obnoxious.
That's how it was.
I agree with Brian. Clear, logical, and readable science and insightful and creative theology were posted regularly by brilliant men and women who were motivated by their irritation and interest to crush the proudly ignorant and gently instruct the humbly ignorant.
Sweet. I think I'll sit back and dream of the good ol' days a while.

A poll
Each of us seems to have a different purpose here, and it sounds like those purposes don't always work together.
Ok, one final question.
There's a party over at Mammuthus' house. He's been published regularly lately, because he's brilliant and does excellent work. He and a few of his buddies are getting together to discuss Mammoth alleles. It's a novel issue, and to preserve accuracy and the dissemination of good information, there will be no beer allowed, and reviewers from Cell Magazine will be there to moderate the discussion.
There's also a party at Brian's. It's not your typical party. Brian is an obnoxious skeptic, and I'm over it with him. We're having a live debate on Genesis and Exodus and their relation to evolution and the age of the earth. We get three minutes each, then the audience gets to ask questions for fifteen minutes, then Brian and I get three minutes each, then audience fifteen until everyone is too bored or drunk to go on. The beer costs $2 for a pint. (I don't drink, btw.) There's no moderator, just a timekeeper who's plays front line for the New York Giants and is also the bouncer. He's also a religious fanatic, evangelized by Mr. T ("I ain't Jesus; if you hit me on one cheek, I'm hitting you back!"), and he was thrown out of college for bad grades.
We've specifically invited Crashfrog to our party, who's a black belt in something or other. Ben is probably going to invite Dan, but I'm drawing the line at Rrhain.
Which party you going to?

What's different and what was so good
First, for Jar, from top left in my avatar:
Leilani-3, Manuha-7, Janelle-9
2nd row from left: Caleb-11, Zerubbabel (Zube)-15, Noah-14, Joshua-19
Those pictures were from Leilani's 1st birthay, I think, so over two years old. Joshua is an ADHD child who lived with me from his 15th birthday until a couple months ago, when he moved in with most of other single guys in the village. Whoo, whoo! He made it! At 15, it was touch and go...very, very troubled.
How's it different now? Not enough crazy ideas?
Not enough provocation? Not wild enough? Have you seen my post 49 [edited from 50]? That will give you an idea. Let the boastfully ignorant in. They bring out the teacher in those of us who can teach. We are forced to be clear, because we have to answer those car salesmen, which means we have to reach the people he's reaching...Joe average.
