Re: The Formula
Regardless of how many creationists we turn away, regardless of how many (or few) converts we make, the fact remains that we have a low success rate with our arguments. If we can`t impress low numbers, how then can we find a formula for mass conversions in the real world?
I think you guys are having more of an impact than you think. I have show friends this board (some of whom were not necessarily creationists, but didn't have a lot of belief in evolution) and they were blown away by reading some of the threads. A couple of them told me, "wow, I never realized that you basically have to be insane to disbelieve in evolution". In addition, several of them were very amused at the sad state of arguments put forth by some of the "YEC-type" members. Most of my friends were not strong believers either way, but they now all think that no believing in evolution is just silly. Many of them are still Christian, but they seem to have no problem reconciling the two.
You really are teaching a lot of lurkers!
Understand something, the silliness of the arguments put forth by the "YEC-type" posters forces you guys to basically go down to a very simple almost childish level and start from there. This makes it very easy for lurkers to understand your arguments and also allows them to see how ridiculous the common "YEC-type" arguments are.
Your pain and annoynance is a huge GAIN for people like me!

Re: The Formula
And on the exact other side of the coin, I don't understand the rationale that, unlike all other stupid ideas, stupid ideas about something called "God" are to be granted the deepest respect and deference. Why are religious ideas priviledged?
We all laugh when people talk about pink unicorns and spaghetti monsters, because those are silly things to believe in. I don't see why beliefs about God are supposed to be considered any less silly simply because the people who promulgate those ideas are, hilariously, totally serious about them.
Why is your brand of bullshit so much more special than any other bullshit? I don't get it.
I think this type of argument is fine in the FAITH forums, however it is very counterproductive in the science forums.
Remember, science is not ATHEIST, it is NON-Theist. Therefore, instead of telling X-tians that their god does not exist or is silly, we need to re-affirm that when discussing science the belief in god is irrelevant. Evolution has NOTHING to do with god at all. Evolution exists, whether or not a god exists is irrelevant to evolution.
I understand your frustration (I also personally think christianity is a silly mass delusion furthered only by forced indoctrination of children)..... however, it only adds fuel to the arguments that "scientists are just dogmatic atheists trying to disprove and/or destroy god".
Instead of telling someone their evidence from the bible is silly, it's better to just say that it is irrelevant and has no bearing on the soundness of any scientific theory.
I really think that those of us who are evolutionists (a silly term, might as well call someone a "realityist") should try to stick to a NON-THEIST point of view in science forums instead of an ATHEIST point of view. After all, isn't a non-theist outlook more appropriate for a scientist?
