Re: What is up with EvC and what do we do?
Each of us seems to have a different purpose here, and it sounds like those purposes don't always work together
Ben, some people are here with a specific agenda--to change people's minds. They come on here and think at first that they can do that, and after awhile they realize they can't, so they leave. Both sides complain about the other side stonewalling. I've heard both sides saying, "There's no point in talking to these people. It's just the same old song over and over again."
That is not a healthy way, in my view, to participate in this forum.
I get to talk to people whom I could never talk to otherwise, both because they live in some other part of the world or because they live in a completely different cultural circle than me. For example, I get to talk to Parasomnium. This person lives in Belgium, has no doubt a very different background from me, and yet we communicate(thanks to his English: it's not like I could talk to him in Dutch). I got to talk to Faith, whose view of the world is very different from mine, and yet we communicated. That in itself is worthwhile.
Not to mention all I learned scientifically about TOE by asking questions. A lot of people on this forum have answered my questions with great patience, in that I do not have a scientific background.
So I don't see anything wrong with any of that.

Re: What is up with EvC and what do we do?
Because of that, I have my doubts in our ability to address it. But I'm thinking hard. Any ideas?
Other posters keep saying that the "PNT," by which I suppose they mean the process of approval of topics (?) is something relatively new and is an inhibiter of . . . creativity?
I did not know it was new and I did not know that before it was a "free for all" in which anybody could post anything. So I guess these posters are saying, just let anybody post anything, no controls at all. And let them curse eacn other out if they want to.
Was that the way it was in the past?

That's how it was.
How's it different now? Not enough crazy ideas?

Re: A poll
Is science fundamentally addressing religious beliefs and, if so, is that what we want?
Technically, no. But TOE hints at a Godless creation.
why would someone who so obviously doesn't care about the measured facts be asking these questions?
I don't think it's a matter of not caring as of not understanding. TOE is not intuitive. Thinking in terms of "kinds" is very natural.
To many the evidence honestly seems sketchy becuase it's not that easy to grasp.

Re: A poll
Not just TOE, in my opinion, but any systematic set of natural laws that seem to show that the universe (or the subject of the particular field) works automatically, without a skipper to keep everything moving along in the right directions.
Yes, but some think of "laws of nature" in the legislative sense of the word "law." Argument from design.

Re: Oh come all ye faithful!
Also, I wonder how many people here have had private e-mails from lurkers thanking them for providing information/answers to something that has been troubling them for a long time, or saying how impressed they are with your knowledge of the topic, or even someone asking them to look over an essay they have written? I have had countless emails from lurkers of the type mentioned, and I bet quite a few members here have too, so we are providing a service
I never have received any private e-mails. I take that back. I got one lousy e-mail, and that was from an Admin. wanting to know what forum I wanted to put a PNT in. Finally I got fed up and got rid of my e-mail address. My job is to enlighten lurkers, and I haven't enlightened anybody. Here I am taking all this time to compose pure and precise prose and deftly plagiarize obscure books that nobody has read; I've provided discourse upon the contexts, frames of reference and points of observation which would determine the nature, origin, and meaning of data if I had any data; I've tirelessly labored to simplify arguments to the point of the commonplace; I've bent over backwards to argue about subjects of which I know nothing--and what have I gotten out of it? Some kicks in the butt, a black-eyed ego or two, a shove in the face. Nobody gives a damn; nobody cares.
You're quite right, Brian. This place is shitty.

Maybe I should be more explicit, Brian. Send not to know, Brian, for whom the bell tolls: it tolls for thee.
If you want to improve the forum, do it yourself--with your own intelligent posts!

I wouldn't say it is shitty, but it is heading that way.
Well, you will be mercilessly satirized with your blinking eye. I hate that damn thing. Coming on here and criticizing people! How dare you?

Re: Another suggestion: open forums to those who request it
Why not open up the forums for direct topic opening for all members over "X" posts?
Good idea. Speeds up the process. Sometimes PNT's sit around for awhile because the mods do not have time to get to them. By the time they get promoted, interest is lost.

Re: The Formula
Creationists leave unconvinced.
True, but there are those who accept evolution but know very little about it. This is a good place to learn. I speak from personal experience. Isn't that useful?

I don't think you can get mutual repect with a mindset that regards believers as idiots at best and evil at worst

Re: Rudeness
you have no problem asserting that the beliefs of others are ridiculous while yours, predicated on the same lack of evidence and consistency, are to be held as inviolable,
Why don't you get off your highhorse, Crashfrog? Your beliefs are just as inviolable as everybody else's.
Haven't you just insulted everybody who believes in the tooth fairy?
Please . . . total nonsense.
