They were pretty straighforward about it. Darwin's contribution was not common descent, but the idea that life arose "autonomously", that there is "no Designer," etc,...
But, again, life arising autonomously does not rule out a God, a Creator or a Designer. (Though "No Designer" is pretty clear).
There could be a God who governs the Universe. (He/She/It) may be (in charge of/under the supervision of/the actual) Creator of the Earth upon which life arose autonomously.
Or, life on Earth could have arrived here from a comet, at which point evolution took over. But the Creator could have created that comet, and God could have flicked it in our direction.
None of this makes one lick of difference to the Theory of Evolution
