Re: divine hand-holding?
Did they make a distinction between Designer and Creator? Or did they only use the term Designer? It could be that they are simply denying a divine hand-holding of creation as it progresses...
That would still be an error.
I don't think so.
Look at it this way, according to supporters of Intelligent Design, ID is not religion. They point out that the Designer does not need to be a God. It could just as easily be an Alien Intelligence.
For that matter, the term God and Creator as not mutually exclusive either. There are many Gods which played no role in the creation of the world in their respective pantheons. (Native American, Egyptian, Hindu, etc.)
Therefore when the scientists say that the ToE shows that there is no Designer, they are necessarily saying that the ToE shows that there is no Creator, nor are they saying that the ToE shows that there is no God.
I think you are reading into what these scientists are saying based on your (not entirely wrong) assumptions about what these scientists believe.

Re: divine hand-holding?
They were pretty straighforward about it. Darwin's contribution was not common descent, but the idea that life arose "autonomously", that there is "no Designer," etc,...
But, again, life arising autonomously does not rule out a God, a Creator or a Designer. (Though "No Designer" is pretty clear).
There could be a God who governs the Universe. (He/She/It) may be (in charge of/under the supervision of/the actual) Creator of the Earth upon which life arose autonomously.
Or, life on Earth could have arrived here from a comet, at which point evolution took over. But the Creator could have created that comet, and God could have flicked it in our direction.
None of this makes one lick of difference to the Theory of Evolution
