Could you live without Google (or any of its peers)?
the "arachno" part of my screen name is not derived from the biological arachnids, but the digital sort: web-crawlers. i think that should make my position obvious.

Re: Gramps knows more than you do.
No, I can't.
My area of concentration is not modern american history. Hell, my focus isn't even american history. Try european history (post french revolution, though I'm just starting really).
Therefore we know more
Perhaps about the time you grew up in. Even then, you need to be immersed in the culture and history of your time. I know I'm not in tune with my generation's pop culture. And as others have said, being closer does not equal being more accurate. First person accounts are valuable in history. But they are definitely biased. Since when was being biased considered being accurate? Those accounts also have the problem of not knowing everything that is going on.
But you were arguing that we young'uns can't see the fuller sweep of history as well as you old fogies. And the only way for you to know more about the fuller sweep of history than me is to be old as dirt, literally. And everywhere at once. Oh wait, you would have to be god himself.
Tell me, why did Napolean's newphew, as emperor, designate himself as the third?
Was Jeremy Bentham a conservative?
Who was Rosa Luxemburg?
Why did Great Britain not experience revolution in 1848 as compared to Paris, Frankfurt, and practically everyother major western european city?
Was nationalism liberal? Can it be?
And from what others have said about the Zoot Suit Riots, I highly doubt that that single event explains post-war pop fashion or social rebellion. Single events almost never explain a broad, general event. Case in point--was it Germany taking Alcase-Lorraine that triggered WWI? Was it the death of Archduke Ferdinand? What about the political style of Kaiser Wilhelm II? Another case--why is it that even though the UK said it would not go to war over Eastern Europe, it did precisely that in WWII? Afer all, it was Poland that was invaded, nevermind the disintegration of Czeckoslavia(sp?)?

Re: Just a better librarian?
So you think Google is just a better librarian?
I guess so. Quality of the library is potlock, f'shizzle. But that's not Google's doing.

funny story though. if you do google "web robots" or similar searches you can come up with a list of such robots. "robots" or "spiders" are programs that relate to web-connectivity, traversing link architecture to determine various things like link-depth... things like google are essentially front-ends for these spiders. but does your average person on the internet know that? no, of course not.
to them "robot" means "chatbot" and "chatbot" means "aol instant messenger screen name." and with an "arachnophilia" robot listed near the top of that list, i find myself somewhat regularly subjected to a turing test.
for a while, i had a much more formal (read: googled) explanation of the above as my aim profile, which began with the words "I AM NOT A ROBOT." yet i still managed to get a few of these conversations a day. i'm glad they've stopped.

You are so a robot
I AM NOT A ROBOT.
That's just what I'd expect a robot to say, robot.

Zoot Suits
cf writes:
I don't understand what "pegged pants" are.
Pegged pants were a very big deal for the style-conscious teen of the late 40s and early 50s. Here's a boy who got away with wearing a zoot suit with pegged pants (narrow cuffs).
The cuff circumference of your trousers meant everything to your social status back then. If your pants were uncuffed and straight-legged you were very uncool, probably lived in a devoutly religious home. You were at high risk of being accused of wearing "bell-bottoms." Yuk! But if your pants were pegged like those in the picture you were very cool and probably came from a broken home. Coolness was measured by degree between the two extremes. My father, a strict conservative, allowed me to get my pants pegged just a little. But I was not allowed to look in any way like a Zoot Suiter.
This is where the divide began, I think, that put teenagers on a troubled track leading to rebelleous things like rock 'n' roll and Beatniks. Hence America morphed from infantile paralysis to juvenile delinquency. Ever watch the movie "Blackboard Jungle"?

You're probably right. But I am drawing on my person experience to analyze post-war history, which is of course dubiously anecdotal. What I find strange about the zoot-suit craze is how anti-GI it was; they had fought and died for our American freedom and won the great war, but in very short order their kids were emulating the gangster elements of Mexicans instead of true-blue American values.
Something was going south in America that the GIs couldn't stop.

Gangster elements of Mexicans?
Huh?
For the origin of Zoot Suits look to Chicago, Harlem, Memphis and Detroit.

This is true. The Zoot Suit Riots of LA lodged in my memory and probably biased my thinking. The pegged-pants fad that reached my home town, Toledo, was the first such youth craze after the war (that I can remember). It seemed to me to be a fulminating event to me.

Re: Single events in history
Well, since the Zoot Suit first appeared in the 1920s, and had been worn by folk in movies since then and seen by just about every moviegoer, and the Zoot Suit riot was not until 1942 and involved US Military and civilians, I'm not sure how you can relate the style to Juvenile Delinquency.
