Re: Even handed?
that topic was a bad choice for promotion -- and i'm surpised it got through.
There was some discussion on that. IIRC, and it's been a while so forgive any vagueness, the topic was promoted because it was from a child, it was a valid question, and it was also one that should be pretty easy to answer succinctly. We realized that there might be piling on but hoped we could keep it within reason. There was no question that the Admins knew it would be a high maintenance topic.

Science & Religion
arachnophilia writes:
there are both science AND religion fora here.
That is very true.
The site though was established as a place to seriously look at the claims being made by some of the religious groups that Biblical Creationism was a science. That is still the primary purpose of the site.
However, most members here are multi-dimensional and have a wide range of interests. Over time, additional venues were added to allow discussions outside the straight and limited area of science as it relates to the question of evolution.
One key part of the thinking that went into what we see today is that we needed to add additional venues to get around some of the limitations of the people who were not strictly scientific. This led to adding other areas, specifically "Education and Creation/Evolution", "Social Issues and Creation/Evolution" and "Theological Creationism and ID". We hoped that by adding those areas, areas where non-scientific evidence could be given equal footing with scientific evidence, Biblical Creationists would be encouraged to try to present their best cases in support of their position.
Quite quickly it became obvious that even among the religious participants, there were vast differences in how even evidence such as the Bible was viewed. This led to the addition of "Bible Study", "Faith & Belief" and "Comparative Religions" and several reorganizations of the board.
But the primary purpose of the board remains the same, and that is to try to discuss whether or not Biblical Creationism and its surrogate, ID, are in anyway science.

Re: Science & Religion
A primary purpose which no longer holds prime position amongst the posters. You can't stop evolution it seems and the site is what it has evolved into. And the basis for the supposed bias towards creos has outlived its use (if it ever existed at all). It should be naturally deselected
But the purpose of the board and any alleged prime position amongst posters, whatever that is, are two different subjects. The purpose of the board is still to discuss whether or not Biblical Creationism and its surrogate, ID, are science. That is the goal of the board.
The fact that we have gone out of our way to allow other interests and subjects to be discussed has nothing to do with the purpose of the board.
To address what many people seem to want to post we have created additional venues for them to use. Those were outlined in the message you are replying to, Message 138.
There still appears to be a need for a two tiered system in both content and behavior. Part of the two tiered system are all of the forums that have been added in the Social & Religious area where the standards of evidence are much lower than in the Science Forums as well as the forums in Side Orders which include forums such as the Coffeehouse. If we were to move to a single tiered system where all were required to abide by the same standards of evidence and behavior as in the Science Forums it would reduce the opportunites for the Biblical Creationist to ever present their arguments for their position. This would include not just their positions on the primary issue, whether Biblical Creationism or its surrogate, ID, are science, but also positions on morals, social issues, education, philosophy or history.
