There's nothing sentimental and phony about rescuing animals and caring for animals. But there sure is about making ooing and ahing over baby birds into the meaning of life, and there sure is about saying that flowers are how the earth laughs. Yik. Almost ruins the beauty of flowers and the charm of baby birds. It's about proportion. Ah Yes, ooing and ahing over baby birds into the meaning of life is certainly phony. The meaning of life is that you are a damned sinner with going to hell stamped on your forehead and not the beauty and wonder of baby birds. Yeah, right.
Yes Faith, by all means start your club. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Nah, fraid not. The first is just a pic somebody sent to me while the next two were from in the Everglades.
Still, glad you enjoyed them. Ain't the world just wondrous and awesome? Sorry but if you agree with that statement you may not be eligible for memebership in Faith's Club.

This is insulting. They were not "poor because they got their legs blown off". Each of those men/women followed their beliefs and most are proud of what they have done. I meant "poor" in the financial sense, not in the spiritual or moral sense. Edited by robinrohan, : No reason given.

perhaps it was just a poor choice of words.
It was not my choice of words anyway, in the original post. What I said was, "My heart went out to them." But I'm not supposed to say it was terrible that they got their legs blown off because that might mean I'm suggesting they can't have a good life after? They might have a fine life, but it's still terrible if you get your legs blown off. Edited by robinrohan, : No reason given.

Romans 1 writes: 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator”who is forever praised. Amen. Nice pics.

Yes, you might say that. It would be damned hard though for you to show where it is applicable to anything I said. LOL

Robin, seeing as how this post is coming to a close, do you have any final statement concerning a proper ending of it? Has the concept of Boasting in general been clarified?
Do we all agree that boasting is considered in context to a situation and that not just atheists but believers of all persuasions tend to boast as well? Is boasting an undeniable product of the human condition? Have any of us learned anything in this thread? Do you have any closing statements or fodder, perhaps, for a new thread?

Truthfullly i don't, and I think at that point it extended into a rant of unreasonableness to say such things. In which case I do apoligize.
Whether or not I question my own reactions is not a part of this conversation. As Mr. Robinrohan is the topic of discussion.

Actually it was a true life story. My older sister was a real stunner as a young woman and would tend to get a fair bit of attention from the young men. One Saturday night in the pub, I noticed some guy becoming increasingly captivated by her. His mates were ribbing him and giving him the push on - his face was as pale as death at the prospect of approaching this goddess. Finally he could bear it no more. Over he trundled.
The first my sister knew about it was this guy tapping her on the left shoulder, dipping around to the right and awaiting her to turn back to him and his cheesy nervous grin. He then delivered a corny chat up line along the lines of the one I wrote above. She gave him a look of complete disgust and dismissed him with about the cruelest rebuttal of a mans advances that one could ever hope not to be in the receiving end of: "Get lost fuckface" .. . . . Own conclusions: Boasting is to me, self-praise of ones own attributes, skills, talents, abilities etc. Whilst part of the human condition, it is umbilically tied to the position of the atheist (whether it is expressed openly or not). As far as an atheist is concerned, all he is able to do and achieve, comes from self - there is no one else to praise in a direct sense: one can acknowledge parents, teachers etc for having ploughed the soil in which the attribute grew to be an exemplary one - but the growing, the achievement is down the atheist himself. The Christian is travelling in a direction where he comes increasingly aware that more and more praise is to be directed at God: for it is He who gave all the gifts that we have. He comes to realise that the Christian walk, which involves removing the grubbiness which prevents these gifts from the full expression that God intended, is also the work of God. An immature Christian might boast in himself as much as (or more than) another. But with maturity his boast becomes a boasting in God alone. Less "how great I am!" more "how great thou art!" That is, or should be the direction. Hows that for a brilliant summing up..heh?!! Edited by iano, : No reason given. Edited by iano, : No reason given.

faith writes: Why are you all making this huge moral calamity out of a man's feeling for people who are suffering????? Why? He started this about boasting right. The story he told of the VA shows he really doesnt get it. I'm a vet, I may not be missing any parts, but I sustained damage to my left knee(permanent limp) and a bullet wound to my r. forearm. I KNOW AND HAVE TALKED TO MANY WHO are disabled vets missing limbs, they dont want pity they want a little respect! One question for you faith. seeing as how I'm an atheist and I'm welling to volunteer to help less fortunate, have you ever helped any vets by volunteering?

Would you not say that a poor and pitiful way to judge another human! Again, if you felt sorrow, why you do not volunteer your services to help 'these poor shabbily dressed vetrans' out? Yes, please don't close it until I have a chance to write something in summary. I can't right now.

That saying is so often misquoted.
The saying is "The proof of the pudding is in the tasting" And frankly, I prefer the sweet taste of sentementality rather than the overly bitter taste of 'we are all sinners and corrupt' concept.

Hows that for a brilliant summing up..heh?!! Pretty lousy. It makes invalid assumptions about atheists (i.e. that they are "umbilically tied" to boasting) and theists (that maturity is possible in that context).
