Been smoking these
for about 10-12 years, varying between one and five (cigars, not boxes) a day. I'm not saying I'm quitting smoking, but I'm seeing how long I can go without, or at least cut drastically down.
The wife and I have both kinda cut down (she smokes cigarettes), just by not smoking inside. So far, I haven't had anything since about midnight last night/this morning.
I'm not telling anyone in my life about it, I don't want a big deal made or anything like that. I thought I'd use this thread to chronicle my progress (or lack thereof).
Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Added the "smoking" to the topic title. Don't want people thinking the topic's about quiting the forum (People, let's have quality content in our topic titles. Please).

Re: Good on you!
Would you be interested in a sort of mutual support thread?
Uh, I guess so.
Ummmm ... You go girl!
Seriously though, I'm not sure how good I'd be at that kind of thing, but we can see what happens. Honestly, it sounds like the best help you could get right now would be a hubbymuzzle.

God help you if you live in Illinois.
So true, and for so many reasons completely unrelated to smoking.
As I understand it, my homeland of Minnesota has implemented something of a like nature, although I'm not sure about parks.
Ain't it grand that we have so many different levels of politicians who know so much better than we do how we should live our lives. Makes you proud to be an American, don't it?

Well, I was kinda trying to make a little funny by doing that semi on purpose.
Oh well. Carry on.

Curiouser and curiouser
Ran into this site, discussing the effect of quitting smoking.
It contained this little chart,
which seems to show that those who smoke but give it up before 35 actually have a slightly longer life expectancy than those who never smoked.

Depends on where your nose is.
In my house, you have no right to complain.
In a public place, you ought to have no right to complain.

Re: Only a matter of time before it becomes illegal
I've had neighbors who played music louder than I liked.
I've had neighbors who cooked foul smelling foods.
I've had neighbors with loud kids.
I've had neighbors who swam in cheap perfume or cologne.
Where does one draw the line in regulating how one person can use their own property for the comfort of others?

That's like somebody who assauts you saying it isn't his problem that your nose got in the way of his fist.
Well, as long as you ignore the different between willful, intentional, reckless, negligent, knowing and several other degrees of conduct.

What makes this smoking ordinance any different from a noise ordinance?
Most noise ordinances apply only during certain times of the day.
No noise ordinance that I'm aware of prohibits all noise that might reach someone else's ear.
When people live within a certain proximity to one another, it's impossible for each of them to live their lives in such a way as to avoid any overlap of interests. It thus becomes a matter of balancing interests.
In a perfect world, one could rely on the political process to try to strike a balance that gives due regard to the interests of all. However, when one of the groups is disenfranchised as a practical matter, then we can no longer rely on the political process to get a fair result. And, in the current political climate, with everyone and has dog telling us that smoking is responsible for cancer, heart disease and killing kittens, and the number of people smoking going down every year, you'd be a fool to think that the political process is going to give any regard to the interests of smokers.

Well, I guess you think Subbie is, "really messed up", then.
Better men than he have said so in the past.
I expect others will say it again in the future.

A reasonable inference from the way this thread petered out is that my attempt 6 years ago was for naught.
As I type this now, I've not had a smoke since Sunday evening. I'm not saying I'm quitting. I'm saying I'm not smoking right now. So far so good. I don't think I'm as edgy as I was Monday night or most of Tuesday.
I didn't tell the wife, but she figured it out by last night. Other than that, nobody else knows.

Well, considering that one of my motivating factors right now is a lack of buckage, I probably won't be going down that route.

Well, the cigarettes are the wife's, so getting rid of them isn't a good idea. However, since I smoke(d) cigars, they aren't a temptation for me.
