Haste and timeliness are not the same thing.
NoNukes writes: Early to bed early to rise... Up all night, sleep all day!
Those are both saying the same thing.

Re: is it bunk?
Golffly writes: I don't see any particular reason to believe they didn't think it was factual.
I think the whole idea of "factual" is pretty new. It's closely related to science (which is pretty new): something "factual" has evidence to support it. Ancient peoples were not that interested in evidence. They didn't have the means to collect evidence even if they wanted to. Their thinking tended to be pretty figurative.

Faith writes: The Bible is to be believed, not torn to pieces.
On the contrary, Paul said that we should analyze it:
quote: 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
He also seemed to be wary of commentaries:
quote: 2 Timothy 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Faith writes: There couldn't be a more perfect example than your post of wrongly dividing the word of truth.
But you said that the Bible is not to be "torn apart" at all.

Golffly writes: quote: 2 John 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed.
It's okay Faith, you shouldn't discuss things with non believers anyway.
Note what "this doctrine" is, in context:
quote: 2 John 1:5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
The ones we shouldn't receive into our houses are the ones who don't bring the doctrine of loving one another - for example, the ones who bring the doctrine of inerrancy.

Re: An irreconcilable clash of world views
Faith writes: The Protestant Reformation is still one of the biggest events in western history and dominated the west politically and culturally until very recently as well as being the reason for the diminishment of Rome's political power in the west.
That's right. The Protestant Reformation was about political power.

Re: An irreconcilable clash of world views
herebedragons writes: It is just not a simple set of reasons. Much like all major world events such as WWI, WWII, the Renaissance, etc.
I was just pointing out that the Reformation was about political power; I didn't exclude any other reasons. If you'll notice, I acknowledged jar's reply when he added wealth.

And in conclusion...
I went back over my posts to see what my opinion on the topic is and I discovered that I said a lot of clever things. That isn't just an empty opinion; there are approximately twenty-four cheers to support it. The reason is inescapable: I was clearly inspired by God.
