Author | Topic: Obama supports Ground Zero mosque. Religious freedom or is he being too PC? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

In the later, the purpose is to annoy and offend. Why should those two actions be judged as corresponding or equivalent?
Because they are both protected under the Constitution. The issue is, if I purposely try to offend Muslims, I may not be allowed to because I am purposely trying to offend Muslims - (Here's here I agree with Huntard in that, we do so because we are scared of their reaction). However, if I purposely try to offend Christians, most of the time, not much will be done. Originally, Comedy Central didn't allow Matt and Trey to draw an image of the prophet. In the same episode, just to expose the hypocrisy, Matt and Trey showed Jesus taking a shit on Bush and the flag. That's bullshit, to allow one an not the other. Either we can offend everyone equally or we can't. The issue is, are Muslims trying to offend with the mosque/civic center? But that's only an issue to those who care. I don't care whther they are or not. Some people see it that way, they are offended. Wrongfully so, but offended none the less. - Oni

Oni writes: Those who Comedy Central considered when they pulled the episode.
nwr writes: I really don't see the relevance. Rrhain asked me who were those considered. CC did pull the episode from their normal tv, you can see it on the website though. They considered someone's feelings. Comedy Central said they considered the feelings of Muslims who would get offended. - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given. Edited by onifre, : No reason given.

The are being allowed to show and say very offensive things. That's true, in this case they have. The news does show it when it is part of a protest or something along those lines. - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given.

It is more likely that they felt the heat coming from cable TV operators who were afraid of a negative reaction from their viewers. But not from thier Buddhist veiwers. - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given.

Which one would that be? Super Best Friends, which you're right, can't even be seen on their website. The ONLY reason they originally aired it was because it was a pre-9/11 and Danish cartoonist time when shit wasn't so tense. But it has since been taken off.
source - I'm sure you already know this but for those reading who don't:
quote: Here's a picture (Mohammed is the one with the little red box around it on the right side, under Satan): Yeah, if you squint real hard and freeze frame the intro to the show, you may actually catch it. - Oni

Not after their first "mohammed controversy", in which they censored South Park showing Mohammed, and to which the Jesus shitting thing was a response (episode "Cartoon Wars Part II"), which was aired in april 2006 after the "cartoon riots" in regards to that Danish fellow. Thattttssss the fucking episode I was thinking about, "Cartoon Wars!" Thanks for being such a South Park freak, lol. So that was the episode that they weren't allowed to show the image of Mohammed but did show Jesus shitting on Bush and the flag, right?
Not wanting to offend muslims my ass! They pussied out. I know, man. Fags - Oni

That's why most radio people are switching to satellite, 'cause of the fucking FCC and thier petty fines.
In this case, the courts reversed the decision, and it was due to an awared show accidental use of bad language. But had it been on the radio, more than likely, the DJ would have just been fired. The courts could reverse it later but the DJ would still be out of a job. It's what happened to Opie & Anthony, discussed here: Gender and Humor, starting at the middle of the page. - Oni

How do we decide who is going to be sad? Again, I don't care about the feelings. I don't care who ends up sad. In fact, if it's fair, everyone will at some point be sad. No one needs to decide who is going to be sad, that doesn't even make sense. By default someone will be sad, but if it's fair, everyone at some point will feel it. What we shouldn't do is decide to hold back because one perticular group will get sad, then shit on another group who we don't care about or disregard their feelings - Like not allowing the image of Mohammed in the same episode that allowed the image of Jesus to shit on Bush and the flag. That is hypocritical bullshit. That's what I mean by, it should be fair game.
Partly by refusing to describe what you mean by "fair" and partly by showing that you think those who disagree with you should "shut the fuck up about it." I haven't refused, maybe just misunderstood what you wanted me to answer. Lots of posts. But I have answered it, so I hope you of all people are content with the answer - prolly not though. And if I wanted people to shut the fuck up, why would I be here debating you and others?
So which is it? How do we decide who is going to be sad? Be specific.

How do we make the decision of who gets to be the one(s) to have to suck it up? That would depend of course on what we're talking about. On stage, I don't make a decision to exclude anyone. I attack everyone equally. On TV it would be up to the network to decide who they want to offend and who they don't.
Are there certain ethical rules you are following? If so, what are they? How did you manage to determine who has to go away without getting what they wanted? No rules, just self-awareness that certain things when said will offend, I'd call that common sense. I equally offend everyone. For a TV network, that's their decision.
Nothing is satisfactory to everybody so there will always be somebody who would rather you not do what you just did. So since that is the case, why should anybody think that this particular instance is any different? I haven't, my position, if you read my OP, is that I think they should build the mosque. My friend made the point that often an exception is made as to not offend Muslims, like in the case with Comedy Central and at Yale with the Danish cartoons - I provided links to those examples. Others here, including yourself, have pointed out that it's not the same thing. And I agree.
Oni writes: Those who would not like to see the image of the prophet on TV, in a cartoon, etc.
Rrhain writes: But who are they? Some anonymous, unknown nobody whom you can't identify? The best pat is you actually answer this by acknowledging who "they" are. Everyone knows and can follow what I mean, except you, but not really, 'cause look:
Rrhain writes: Comedy Central had no problem standing up to Christian groups who were not happy with that way South Park handled Christianity, but they suddenly turn into quivering lumps of Jell-O when faced with threats from some Muslims. All of a sudden you know that Muslims threatened Comedy Central, so you know who the "they" are.
No, they'll just blow up the Oklahoma Federal Building, wander into Jewish schools and start shooting people, bomb the Olympics, kill doctors who peform abortions, etc., etc.
The people who are protesting the mosque did that? - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given.

You have long since abandoned your "friend's" position and started talking about your own position Nope, still my friends position. I totally support the building of the mosque.
Why do you require other people to do your homework for you? Please provide a link.... - Oni

The person who is looking for fairness will never go away sad if it's fair. They'll only be sad if it's unfair. You misunderstand. I mean fair as in everyone, every group, religion, institution, etc., will have to deal with their feelings being hurt, because no punches are held back. However, in the case with Comedy Central showing Jesus shitting on the flag, but in the same episode they didn't allow Matt and Trey to show the image of the prophet, that is not fair. And, the one episode that did show it, has since been removed from their website, yet Jesus shitting on the flag remains. This again isn't fair. You're right that it's corporate bullshit, but it is a fact that it was done in that manner. In this case, Christians are offended by the image of Jesus shitting on the flag but Muslims aren't because special concern was shown to them.
Oni writes: And if I wanted people to shut the fuck up, why would I be here debating you and others?
Rrhain writes: Do you really want an answer to that? I've seen the baiting you've been attempting. Do I or do I not debate on this forum with people who disagree with me? I bait you cause you're an easy target. Also cause it's fun to poke fun at you and some of the ridiculous arguments yuo've made in the past. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the debate. I always reply to you, knowing that you'll be a condescending douch most of the time. But I still enjoy it. So, don't shut the fuck up, continue displaying your douchyness and I'll keep baiting you. - Oni

No, Moose means, don't go off into your typical long-winded replys that become redundant half way through the post. Just answer in short posts so that we don't have to set aside an hour of our day to read and respond to your long-winded posts. Notice it's not just me, lots of members seem to think your posts are long-winded. And I can't wait for your long-winded reponse to this post. - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given.

Vaudeville hung on until the fifties, maybe even early sixties in Baltimore. I did not know that. Cool... So you're kinda old. - Oni

That's why we need Muslim neighbors now and mosques in our neighborhoods. I can appreciate the need for multi-cultural neighborhoods, and I can appreciate that doing so breeds tolerance. With that said, I doubt we need more churches, mosques, religious institutions that, while culturally appealing, are inherenty useless for a progressive society.
Displays of hate give 1.1 billion Muslims good reason to believe we can offer them nothing but contempt and prejudice. We don't need the media and a few protesters to do that, our government has done a fine job of that. In fact, it's the reason there is a mosque being built near "Ground Zero" and not the World Trade Center towers. - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given. Edited by onifre, : No reason given.
