Why do scientists think parallel universes exist? What is the evidence or theory that makes this a plausible idea?
I agree with 1.618 here.
There are some very bizarre behaviours of matter at the quantum level. Attempts to explain these behaviours has led to a lot of speculation. Basically anything that can't be ruled out is conjectured as an explanation for what is going on.
I don't think the scientists do think that parallel universes exist or think that they don't exist it is simply a speculation about why quantum behaviour is so weird. They can't be tested (as far as I know) so they remain speculations.
There have been objections to some of the "explanations" behind QM before. Einstein, for example, objected to "spooky action at a distance". However, it turned out, decades later, that tests could be done on this speculation and he was wrong. Now we have suggestions of using this effect for computing.
Will parallel universes go through the same stages? Dammed if I know.
