Re: Yawn.
The yawn is applicable because I'm tired too.
I'll address this tomorrow. There are several lines of evidence about the Stephans Quintet galaxies and the real distances.
Also, the paper that is to appear has taken a rather long time to be published.
It's on astro-ph from months ago. It will be interesting to compare the two and see what the referees did.

Re: Paul Marmet.
Too little material. The typical photon is never scattered.

Thanks for twisting my words.
I was talking about two different things.
At least I know the physics and you are just groping in the dark.
I was going to give a detailed explanation of both these DIFFERENT concepts but it's useless with you.
The intergalactic medium is almost empty. The density is extremely low. The Lyman Alpha absorption of the Lyman series emission is caused by specific line of sight absorption by galaxies in the line of sight.
That doesn't effect most photons just those at just the right frequency for absorption.
Geez!!!!
THINK ABOUT CROSS SECTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND DON'T TWIST OR TAKE OUT OF CONTEXT MY WORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

**** Cross sections ****
I repeat, think cross sections. Find a plot of the absorption coefficients versus frequency for hydrogen.
That is all you need to realise what is going on here and what is not.
(Note: A dark galactic cloud such as the Horsehead nebula has nothing to do with the absorbers responsible for the Lyman Alpha forest. They are alike neither in scale or physical properties or chemical makeup)
