So a buddy of mine growing up has finally become enraptured with metal, which I've been listening to since I was a pup. He feels this sense of wasted time where he is only now discovering what I've been enjoying all along. Myself and another common friend are elated since he is joining an unspoken, small, esoteric fraternity.
The problem is that he's now all in to metal, almost exclusively. I think I'm pretty well rounded musically. Although I'm very selective in what I like, the range of music is still pretty broad. There are only a few genres that I just can't get in to.
Anyhow, I've been sending different links to bands that I think will help expand his musical appreciation a bit.
Then it got me thinking about how it would kind of be fun to hear what you all like, and in the process, maybe you can turn me on to some really great acts that are undiscovered to me.
Let the sharing begin.
Further Seems Forever, Within Temptation, Anberlin, Kansas, Traveling Wilbury's, Anthrax, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, All That Remains, Mastodon, Aeon Spoke, Peter Gabriel, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Michael Manring, The Roots, Killswitch Engage, The Who, Jars of Clay
Anyway, that should be enough to get the ball rolling. Sorry about some of the videos considering many of them are cheesy. I would prefer just audio but, eh.... whatever.

Old school Thrash
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss , Pantera - Hollow , Alice In Chains - Down In A Hole , Ozzy Ozbourne - Perry Mason , Sepultura - Arise , Metallica - Harvester Of Sorrow (no video, live only) , Overkill - Horrorscope , Megadeth - Diadems , Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People , Korn - Thoughtless , ACDC - Thunderstruck , Testament - Low
Most of this old school from a very specific era-- mostly 1990-1994. Most of this I've had at one time or another.
I also have a broad range of songs that I like, but it all sort of orbits around the center of my musical solar system - Trent Reznor / Nine Inch Nails.
NIN, aye? What do you think of the former guitarists split when he formed his own band?

Black Sabbath
Ronnie James Dio. Old skool.
I think Ronnie is back playing in Black Sabbath now. And yes, that is well before my time.

Re: Re;Old School
Seriously, though. Nobody else is into Delerium?
Can't say I've heard of them, but then again, I wanted to hear of music I hadn't heard before, so I guess that's a good thing. Got an audio files that you can format to EvC?

Music now or days
I don't listen to a lot of hip-hop, besides Outkast and Mos Def (and I did like Public Enemy and KRS-One back in the day, but I haven't listened to them in ages).
That's because most hip hop has lost its roots. Its the same with this Nu-metal stuff.... Most of it is caca, IMO.
But then again, doesn't every generation claim that theirs is "keeping it real?" I mean, yes, one would expect music to evolve with new sounds, but I'm finding it harder and harder to identify with some of the newer acts in these two genres.
I suppose this is why I find most similarities with underground acts. I only like a few mainstream acts. Most people aren't musically refined enough to understand complex time signatures. They just identify with catchy music.

Re: My Music
Wow, you really like the 70's and 80's style progessive rock, most of which I'm into as well.
I particularly like that you have Transiberian Orchestra, Vic Wooten, Yes, Rush and Bela Fleck.

Re: Re;Old School
Do you use Pandora?
Pandora is great. I've found more bands for a specific genre using them than by any other approach.
