Take comfort Phatboy, the N.T. says atheism is a penalty from God for continually resisting Him. Atheists are rejected by God for rejecting Him.Atheism thinks that God is on trial with them, quite the contrary. The constant refusal to respond to the Spirit runs the risk of the Spirit giving up on you.When the Spirit/God gives up on a person, the end result is violators simply do not care what He thinks of them.
