Faith writes: Funny sort of. But no wonder America is going under. If we do have enemies who want to take us over where's the resistance coming from? Offer them a toke. Let me offer you a different perspective. Marijuana is firmly ensconced in American culture. There is no longer a socio-political divide: the southern country fellas and the northern city boys who populate the military all take part in it. It cuts across income lines as well. Here in my little Adirondack village, to my certain knowledge, marijuana use can be found in poor conservative farmers and high income liberal professionals. There are folks with MS and rheumatoid arthritis and other degenerative diseases who used it for relief long before medical marijuana became fashionable; everyone in town knows who they are, and they could do anything short of smoking naked on the front porch without getting busted--we do have some limits. MaryJane is especially popular with the military. We all sympathize with the guys and gals on leave who can only smoke with their parents and friends for the first days of leave, because they have to pee in a jar when they go back. Pot doesn't make you a bad soldier; many a troop has managed to rock and roll when he'd rather be rocking and rollin', if you know what I mean. Pot does make you less interpersonally aggressive: my combat engineer first sergeant said if he had his way, they'd legalize pot and ban booze, because the potheads come back to the barracks and sleep, while the drunks come home and destroy things. Then he told me exactly in which circumstances he'd have to bust me anyway, and I listened well. Never fear. The soldiers we pay so poorly they need foodstamps will still kill on command, despite marijuana; they'll still come home maimed so we can break our promises about their care. Of course, if they come to the wrong state, they may go to jail for using the pot that relieves their PTSD and head trauma symptons. But when it comes to battle, they'll for sure fill a pit as well as better. "If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads." Yeah, OK, I get your point but I wasn't all that directly thinking of combat situations, more a general unresisting or passive mindset Americans seem to have these days in general, of which pot isn't the cause but can certainly exaggerate. At least it's an expression or symptom of passivity. Befuddlement. Lack of sense of direction.

My own moral fiber has suffered some considerable damage from it, though my honor remains intact. And don't get me started on how we heterosexuals have debauched marriage while it was in our care; the statistics on infidelity and divorce are just sad. The institution is in such disarray, I'm surprised the gays still wanted in... Or maybe that's an effect of Para 1 above and not a cause. You women have a lot to answer for. The country really started going to hell in the 1920s when they began to cut their hair like boys just because they could. Outrageous. My grandma told me how her sister Betty wrote her name and address on every one in a thousand eggs they sold to the wholesaler in town. Since they were both born in the 1890s, the timing is about right for that historical Rubicon. Eventually, she heard from a young man, began a correspondence and then married the fella for 40-odd years until he died. Betty passed at 102, my grandma at 107. At my granny's 105th birthday party, she told me that story, since she could, with Betty dead and all. Then she paused a long while, looked around, and whispered, "She was always kinda loose like that." Of course, when women stole the right to vote, my grandma rode into town on the hay wagon with a dozen other farm ladies; en masse, the men couldn't intimidate them out of their ballot. So she was a bit shameless, too. So this has been going on a long time, ignored by the religious establishment, the media, scientists, Hollywood producers and the government, all: there are now more women than men in the U.S. In the world! Why do you think that is? Is anyone looking into that? What would happen to them if they did? They tell us women just naturally live longer, but they would, wouldn't they? Women type all those damn papers and periodicals! Things were going just swell while the women had to sit down, shut up and do what they're told. Now we're likely to get a woman president, and then it will a She who calls our kids to go die in some godforsaken place to protect the interests of multinational corporations, and that seems, well, wrong. For a woman. For sure it wouldn't be like in the good old days when moral fiber was tough, men were fibrous and virtue was impregnable. The Roaring Twenties launched mere Chaos into the world, and now Her work is done. Everything is broken. Surely the end is near. We can only hope. This is a little bizarre I'll warn you up front. At the beginning of summer when the weather got warm I started experiencing something like bugs biting my legs when I was standing in the kitchen. I thought it might be fleas from a neighbor's very friendly dog that had pushed his way in some months earlier, but I've seen fleas and I couldn't see these. My eyes are bad enough though that I wasn't sure it wasn't fleas, but nobody else could see them either. Then somebody assured me that fleas can't live in this climate. The implication was I'm imagining it all. Eventually I gave up the idea that it was fleas but I kept getting the sensation of being bitten. Then it extended to the computer area and the floor next to my bed. Was I losing my mind or what?
I didn't want to use toxic insecticides even if I could identify some actual bugs which I couldn't. I started researching "natural" means of pest control. I used baking soda and salt in some places which is supposed to kill larva, and mopped the kitchen floor, but although the sensations would diminish for a while they eventually came back. In my researches online I came across people suffering from some of my symptoms -- more than just bugs jumping on legs but that was always the main one -- invisible bugs that bit but sometimes were seen -- tiny little things, specks that would appear and disappear, some black, some white. I had the same array of symptoms as many of the people who felt tormented by these sensations, who for the most part were told by friends, spouses and even doctors that they were imagining it. One guy traced his suffering to bird mites that invaded his house after he removed a bird's nest from the garage. I hoped I didn't have that but I hadn't encountered any birds. But other mites were a possibility. But mites don't jump. Maybe I had more than one bug. As I kept reading it began to seem there were too many possibilities, and they all needed their own treatment to get rid of them, and getting rid of any of them isn't easy and in some cases apparently impossible. Various kinds of mites, but they don't jump although they do get all over people; Or tiny gnats. I tried various repellents suggested by the alternative health sites, mostly crushed herbs. Then just yesterday on a discussion board about these things someone suggested considering thrips. But thrips live on plants and I don't have plants. Nevertheless I found sites discussing thrips actually jumping on people, and in many ways behaving like mites once the get on you. They are so tiny you usually can't see them, but then I remembered that I'd had some tiny little bugs crawling up my window a while back, visible because they were in the sunlight on the window. They looked like tiny little filaments, much narrower than a hair, and only about a 16th of an inch long. But I could see them crawling up the window pane. Washing the window gets rid of them and I didn't think more about them. But now I realize they could have been thrips. Most discussions of how to get rid of thrips are about getting them off plants in your garden. I don't have a garden. I don't even have an indoor plant. I wondered if the produce I've been bringing in for juices might have brought them in. But I also continued to wonder about tiny gnats and mites. Then today I ran across a website addressed to cannabis growers about how to deal with thrips that are eating up their plants. The neighbor on the other side of my kitchen wall smokes a lot of cannabis. His smoke comes into my kitchen under the sink, I suppose alongside the pipes. Is he growing the stuff as well as smoking it? Do his plants have thrips? Is he doing something to them to drive them into my place? He's on the other side of the building so I'd have to walk all the way around to talk to him. What to do? Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

I suppose the first question is whether you have any marks on your skin from this ? Most insect bites which are big enough for you to feel, are going to leave marks on the skin of some sort. The patterns of the marks might help to identify them ?
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Actually I don't have any marks, though I have lots of itchy spots. One website explained that thrips don't actually bite, they're too tiny although their poking around your skin causes the sensation of a bite, a pricking sensation, which is what I have. They don't leave a mark but they itch.

Try boron applied along baseboards and certainly under your sink.
Make a solution with water and mop it on or use a spray bottle. It may also alleviate the itching. 20-mule team borax is made from boron. I don't think the thrips would abandon their plants, even under attack. But if his smoke reaches your place, thrips certainly could, too.
You could use expanding foam insulation (comes in a can at the hardware store) or silicon caulking (squeeze tube) to seal around your under-cabinet pipes, depending on the size of the gaps. The foam insulation works better for larger spaces."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."
