Re: The Obama/Osama connection?
Well, monkey see monkey do. Does this monkey know why it is doing what it is seeing? It doesn't really care, you see. Just like these candidates.
Added by edit.
I'm sorry, I've just been depressed about the whole issue lately, from the Iraq war to health care to gay rights and everything in between. Just ignore me.
Added by edit again.
The monkey thing was partly a pathetic attempt at using Nem_Jug's logic.
During the civil rights era, there were white southerners who asked "would you let a monkey vote?" and then turn around and bluntly deny that they just compared black people to monkeys.
During the now era, Nem_Jug continually remarks rape and murder everytime the topic of gay sex comes up and then turns around and bluntly denies that he was comparing gay people to rapists and murderers.
If others can do it, why can't I?

I'm sorry, I've just been depressed about the whole issue lately, from the Iraq war to health care to gay rights and everything in between.
Have you learned what Obama's stances on those issues are?
Or is it sufficient to you that he's a national candidate for president, and therefore he must be the height of mendacity and selfishness? Has it occurred to you, at any point, that the reason we're in such dire straits viz-a-viz those issues is due, almost completely, to a decade of Republican control of government?
No, of course not. "They're all the same." "Can't tell the difference between Republicans and Democrats."
Please don't vote.
Well, monkey see monkey do. Does this monkey know why it is doing what it is seeing? It doesn't really care, you see.
This from the guy who can't possibly be bothered to do any research about the positions of the candidates.
Please don't vote. Your vote offsets someone who actually got involved in the process and made an intelligent decision about how they wanted to influence the government.
Also, please don't refer to black people as "monkeys."
If others can do it, why can't I?
Gosh, I guess if you want to be an ignorant racist, there's really nobody stopping you.

As I said before, I'm not a politics buff. I can't tell you specific things about each issue. However, I do remember my feelings and reactions when I watched the debates. I've been trying to catch as many debates as I can.

As I said before, for a very long time I supported Obama with all my heart. It's only recently, after I've watched many debates both rep and dem, that I've stopped supporting the dem candidates. Are their views closer to mine than the reps'? Of course. Are they enough? Not for me.
No, of course not. "They're all the same." "Can't tell the difference between Republicans and Democrats."
Please don't vote.
I've never said they sound the same to me. I can tell the differences. They're definitely not the same.
This from the guy who can't possibly be bothered to do any research about the positions of the candidates.
Again, I'm not a politics buff so I can't tell you specific things. I do, however, remember my reactions to each candidate's answers to specific questions in debates.
Please don't vote. Your vote offsets someone who actually got involved in the process and made an intelligent decision about how they wanted to influence the government.
What part of "I'm not going to vote this upcoming primary" don't you understand? You sound like I insist on voting.
Let me say again. I'm not going to vote this upcoming primary. This is due to the following reasons: (1) I've found that my positive reactions to the candidates' positions are diminishing and (2) I've found that I don't know nearly enough specific things about politics or the candidates to have an informed decision. For now, I only have my feelings and reactions to base my decision on, and, as I've been trying to make the same damn argument for years, you can't have an informed opinion or make an informed decision if you only have your feelings and natural reactions to go on.
Crash, it seems to me like you're criticizing me for realizing my own limitations and ignorance.
Also, please don't refer to black people as "monkeys."
Will do.
Gosh, I guess if you want to be an ignorant racist, there's really nobody stopping you.
I guess not.

Would you vote for a monkey?
Unfortunately I think the American public has voted for much worse, many many times in the past... including this last Prez election.
I agree with feeling uneasy with his religious talking points, but I can look past that if he can run a non faith-based administration. He seems pretty level-headed most of the time.

Re: The Obama/Osama connection?
The monkey thing was partly a pathetic attempt at using Nem_Jug's logic.
Oh, yes.... Just mention my name to exonerate yourself.
I suppose I am a convenient whipping boy.
During the now era, Nem_Jug continually remarks rape and murder everytime the topic of gay sex comes up and then turns around and bluntly denies that he was comparing gay people to rapists and murderers.
If others can do it, why can't I?
Because you still don't understand my argument. Well, I suspect you do know what I'm saying, but its convenient for you to intentionally misrepresent my argument as a way to better your own stance.
My argument is one of moral equivocation. If homosexual marriage is fine, then why shouldn't beastiality, pedophilia, or any other stance we currently find taboo?
That's my argument.
But does this mean that you did intend to call Obama a "monkey" on the basis of his race?
Lastly, you've been very vague about why you don't like Obama. Spill the beans dude. What is your beef with him? Of all the Democrat candidates, he's the one I'd least likely gouge my eyes out over should he win. I suppose I could survive with Biden as well.
Then again, maybe that's saying a lot about why you don't like him. Afterall, if NJ doesn't find him totally disagreeable, that might a good indication that he's the wrong candidate for you.
Since you live in Illinois, maybe you have a deeper insight on the man than IL non-residents. So what's the deal? What did he do that was so egregious?

Voting abroad
Unfortunately I think the American public has voted for much worse, many many times in the past... including this last Prez election.
When you were living in the Netherlands, were you able to vote abroad since you are a US citizen, or did you have to relinquish that?
Also, were you able to vote for any Dutch government officials since you were living there, or did your non-citizenship disqualify you?

Reality Check
I've found what appears to be an unbiased, non-partisan website that details all of the flip-flops made by all the candidates.
Seems like the writers have done a lot of homework for a fact-checking mission, which is ultimately to all of our benefit

Re: The Obama/Osama connection?
You understand that doesn't actually answer his question, right? Yes, you can make up a concept, draw boundaries to define it, then apply it. But that doesn't make it a justification for the arbitrary rule at all.
As it stands animals and children can consent. This has been discussed before. The definition then shifts to "informed consent". The two should not be confused. And that latter term has still not been made an objective definition, nor consistently applied.
The difference between your arbitrary position, and a Xian's arbitrary position (which would lump them all in with homosexuality) is merely the criteria used.
The question... and this may very well have been the actual question posed... is what reason do we have to choose one over the other? I don't see an answer to that.

Re: Voting abroad
I was definitely able to vote in US elections while overseas. In fact I'd have to say it was even easier than voting in the states. They mail everything to you and its all very clear... they even gave me a magnifying glass to help see everything.
However I was not able to vote in dutch elections. I believe that if I received a residence permit I'd have been able to vote in local elections, but still not in federal ones. But I never got that or citizenship.

Oh yeah, that's right. I suppose that is what an absentee ballot is. Who coordinates that for you? The State Department officials officiating in the Netherlands?
However I was not able to vote in dutch elections. I believe that if I received a residence permit I'd have been able to vote in local elections, but still not in federal ones. But I never got that or citizenship.
Are you living in the States now, or are you back in the Netherlands? If you aren't at liberty to divulge that information, for whatever reason, that is totally cool. I won't press the issue. The only reason I ask is because I've tried to check up on you a few times since the last time we corresponded, but I either get a "failure delivery" notification or no response. I guess you've changed your email address, or I have sufficiently pestered you.

Re: Voting abroad
When overseas (though this may be different for military) you are still considered a "resident" of the last place in the US you lived. So you contact whatever election board that handles your community elections, and they'll do (hopefully) what needs to be done.
Now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't have been so positive about my voting experience. While my area's board was fantastic in providing materials to me, that might not be the case everywhere.
I am in the States right now, though if I'm lucky I'll be back overseas by next election. Wellll... I suppose if I get really lucky in the US then I'll stay here, but I do feel more at home overseas and so would prefer that kind of luck.
You didn't pester me at all. Unfortunately my email service dropped me without my knowledge (I went for well over a month before discovering it), and during that same period I lost all my old contact info for others. I've updated my EvC profile with my current email address, and so am email-able again. Sorry about that screwup.
