what is observing?
This is starting to wander off topic but...
One point of confusion is about the nature of observation. I think a reasonable view is that an "observation" is any kind of interaction.
That is, if one atom interacts with another one an "observation" has taken place.
I think this is supported by the difficulty of maintaining entanglement. It isn't just an intelligent observer that can destroy the entanglement.
