Actually the largest margin in the history US Senate Impeachment Trial the Senate found Trump guilty. But under the rules of Impeachment Trials it was not sufficient for conviction. But this was the largest cross party vote to convict in all of US impeachment history.
Several of those GOP senators who voted not guilty then went on to say that Trump very obviously and definitely is responsible for the insurrectionist attack on the Capitol. Eg, McConnell, "no question about it."
They know full well that he's guilty, but they chose to hide behind the cowardly lie that they didn't have jurisdiction because he's no longer in office. That lie was disproven on the very first day before the trial actually started.
The first texts reveal everyone assuming Trump was at the driving force for the January 6th insurrection. Here are some choice texts from the article:
Mick Mulvaney: "Mark: he needs to stop this, now. Can I do anything to help?"
GOP Rep. William Timmons of South Carolina: "The president needs to stop this ASAP"
Donald Trump Jr.: "This his(sic) one you go to the mattresses on. They will try to fuck his entire legacy on this if it gets worse."
There's also a trove of texts about overturning the election. They reveal a wide range of positions, from skepticism about conspiracy theories to full-blown buy-in to actively pushing both legal and violent remedies. A number of texts were about preparations for January 6th.
PS: I'm changing the title of this thread from "The Trump Post Presidency" to "The Trump Post Presidency and Insurrection". If there are objections or there's a better thread for insurrection discussion please let me know. I'm making the change because I had trouble rememberinf the right thread for insurrection discussion.

A better title: "The Trump Treason and Insurrection".

quoteBelow is a list of defendants charged in federal court in the District of Columbia related to crimes committed at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C, on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.
Every case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Following arrests, or surrender, defendants must appear before district court magistrate/judge where the arrest takes place, in accordance with the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.
A LOT of names - Just the defendants with names starting with "A" total 18.
The primary instigators and perpetrators for sure.
I’m thinking, though, there may not be enough political will in the present American electorate for this level of recrimination. I fear Trump and company will avoid the kind of legal repercussions that any other society would demand.
More I fear the coming republican election victories. The right is rising. As we have recently seen in the Supreme Court, our liberties, whether directly expressed in the constitution or not, are in danger.
