Perhaps he wants to see if we can develop our characters and morality enough to make peace...despite the preplanned conflict. Either we can eventually....which may be all God wants...or we ultimately find that we can't...in which case we need communion and reconciliation with God.
That doesn't really improve the moral position. If God does pre-plan conflict, with its attendant huge death tolls, pain, horror, grief and suffering, in order just to check from time to time if we've got a bit of moral fibre somewhere, it's kind of shitty.
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?
