Re: Cross cultural causes
Whether you want to do the research depends on how strongly you feel the need to argue your point. I'm of the view that homosexual behaviour varies wildly by culture; I take as evidence the reports I've read of various cultures, from the homo-normative Spartan lifestyle to the radically anti-homosexual views of post-war Britain that lead to Turing's suicide. If you have data that contradicts this, I'd love to read it.
Homosexuality definetly has a genetic element - as does, pretty much, everything else - but I find it extremely doubtful it's as clearcut as XY/XX male/female. I also think modern notions of homo/hetro sexuality are fitting more complicated issues into modern pidgeon holes.

Re: Sex abuse v. rape
it may not be "intercourse" but sexual violation is sexual violation. i promise you.
Bullshit. I've been groped before. It's not pleasant but the idea that I could stand next to my friends who has been raped and go "I've been through exactly what you have" is horseshit of the highest order.

Re: A quibble
I would ask you for your response to:
Effect of anoreceptive intercourse on anorectal function AJ Miles, TG Allen-Mersh and C Wastell, Department of Surgery, Westminster Hospital, London; in Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine Vol 86, Issue 3 144-147; 1993

Because, as I understand, the medical consensus is that Anal Sex is more risky than Vaginal Sex for both partners - although the risks can be largely alleviated by care and consideration.

Re: inherited vs polygenetic homosexuality
Do wild animals experience sex abuse?
(Hint: the answer is no.)
Gang rape has been observed in Dolphins and Chimpanzees, as in the female has been left injured or dead.

Re: Anal sex
You realise that many heterosexual men enjoy having things put up their bottoms, right?
Quoted because I think it bares repeating.
We've gone off on a whole homosexuality tagent when there is no evidence that our hypocritical reverent was gay. From the evidence he just liked (extreme) bondage and having things up his bum.

I'm sorry to hear that.
But I don't think your view generalises.

Ever see ducks mating? "Abuse" would be a mild description.
I expect that most of the behaviours we call "abusive" are experienced by animals.

Having been groped and raped, I see a clear distinction between the two.
So whose personal anecdote are we gonna believe?

Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.

This study has been refuted (Chun, Rose, Mitrani, Silvestre, & Wald, 1997). There is no relation to anal sex and incontinence.
Too, the study you cite has an extremely unusual definition of "incontinence" as release "of either solid stool, liquid stool, or flatus."
In other words, according to their study, if you fart, your incontinent. I think we can safely say that such is a ludicrous claim. And I should point out, the study did not break down the incidences of the various types. It simply asked if the subject had ever experienced any of the symptoms.
And don't try to bring up Engel et al. (1995), either. The seven people they described had all been raped.
As Morin (1998) points out, anal sex when carried out by willing participants does not lead to incontinence or prolapse.
quote:
Because, as I understand, the medical consensus is that Anal Sex is more risky than Vaginal Sex for both partners
You need to change your understanding. Anal sex is no more risky than vaginal sex. The risks are different, yes, but it is impossible to classify one as "riskier" than the other.

Having been groped (but not raped), I think you guys are too uptight about it.

Disclaimer:
Occasionally, owing to the deficiency of the English language, I have used he/him/his meaning he or she/him or her/his or her in order to avoid awkwardness of style.
He, him, and his are not intended as exclusively masculine pronouns. They may refer to either sex or to both sexes!

Turners. Kleinfelters.
But, point taken.
It's probably polygenetic. Epistatic. Some such.

Ducks
One of the worst thrashings I have ever seen for a seminar lecturer was at the hands of a duck biologist. The talk was about 'fear of rape' as motivation for certain behaviors in songbirds. Sounded convincing until a colleague in the audience brought up the impossibility of any form of rape in birds except ducks as birds rely on vent-to-vent transfer of sperm. Apparently male ducks (and presumably other Anisiformes?) have an penis-like organ and can actually rape. And that in some ducks male-on-male rape occurs as part of dominance.
Anyway, was quite amazing as it deflated the lecturer's entire thesis. Which I suppose is good from a science perspective but I would have not wanted to be her at the podium!
