Maybe he's just not a true nihilist.

Actually he didn't say anything much different than he's already said on the board here. Nothing to indicate to me that he's a Christian.
But he HASN'T said atheists all believe a certain thing. In talking about atheist boasting, that's just about the atheists who boast, not all atheists, but a KIND of boasting that an atheist would do if an atheist boasted And I don't see this bit about how he's supposedly claimed to know what others think or believe. All a nihilist is is someone who believes there is no ultimate meaning to life. Most of you all here are nihilists, but you bury it under meanings you invent.

Of course. But a far less dangerous position to occupy that the self-satisfied-all-is-well-with-the-world stance Yes, that is why we have hope for Robin, right?

The majority of human beings are affected by it. It is one of the ways in which we can learn and how we can have a co-operative society. You mean like the cooperative society we have to day. Co-operative society: a contradiction in terms if ever I saw one. The Hawthorne effect has a ways to go Larni A pat on the back from a computer programme designed by psychology aimed at "keeping the worker happy and productive". Give me a "Well done (or even "moderately done", or even "a little less than absolutely uselessly done") good and faithful servant" from someone who I respect - anyday.

Sure I hope. And the relief from tension would be welcome to. This is knocking years off my life.

Robin a fifth columnist? Hmm, a not impossible angle - though I reckon he has the words "Ecclesiastes Man Personified" running down through him like a stick of rock

It is certainly not to argue that your ideas are right - if it were you would actually be presenting arguments instead of attacking peopel for disagreeing. Well, the boasting irritated me. However, I think I would sum up my argument as follows: There is a tendency among non-believers, in their eagerness to prove to believers that one can be very happy, fulfilled, and of high moral character without any religious belief, to exaggerate their qualities and the qualities of their experiences--thus the boasting. This exaggerated view of oneself and of life in general might be advantageous in a practical sense--say in the business world--but it's no good philosophically. One has a skewed vision of oneself and of life. Ned in another thread spoke approvingly of a "healthy ego," but I do not find a sentimental view of oneself and of life to be healthy. I think it very unhealthy. Now it is true that from the standpoint of nihilism it doesn't in the long matter what one's view of life is. But I'm not speaking of the long run. Also, it is true that there is in a sense a sort of subtle boasting in many statements we make. If I make an argument, I am insinuating that I am right. But that sort of "boast" can't be helped, if one is going to say anything at all. When I speak of "boasting," I mean overt, blatant, self-praise. "Your friends, if they can, may bury you with some distinction, and set up a monument, to let posterity see that your dust lies under such a stone; and when that is done, all is done. Your place is filled up by another, the world is just in the same state it was, you are blotted out of its sight, and as much forgotten by the world as if you had never belonged to it."--William Law

I have that impression also. Now, if he comes on and denies it, then we got him! Brian.

Either you are saying that the others are not being honest or you are saying you find their simple statements to be so beyond what you consider possible for you to accomplish as to be unbelievable. Which is it? The latter, I think.

In talking about atheist boasting, that's just about the atheists who boast, not all atheists, but a KIND of boasting that an atheist would do if an atheist boasted And using another definition of boasting than the one the context of his previous posts suggested. But, what he is seeing as boasting is not even anything that crosses an atheists mind, we don't go around thinking that we are happy without God, God is not an issue in our lives, God doesn't exist, it is an non-issue, yet Robin is forcing that on to our thinking.
And I don't see this bit about how he's supposedly claimed to know what others think or believe. Well, when he says that what I suggested is dishonest he is saying that I am essentially thinking what he says I am, when I am not. I do not tell lies, it is one of my pet hates.
All a nihilist is is someone who believes there is no ultimate meaning to life. Most of you all here are nihilists, but you bury it under meanings you invent. Well, Christianity is nihilistic as well, so we are all in the same boat. Brian.

Keyword: IF. Personally, I think that you are a passionate and emotional person who, though given to bouts of depression, are still alive enough to create posts such as this one to see if anyones candle is still lit and why our candles burn at all. You are searching for God, Robin. May you find Him or may He find you! I have new respect as to why you placed yourself on the Nihilists list. It is because you are honest and don't take beliefs lightly! I don't know about the search-for-God part, but I really like your comment. Thanks.

Well, when he says that what I suggested is dishonest he is saying that I am essentially thinking what he says I am, when I am not. I do not tell lies, it is one of my pet hates. You're right, Brain. Sorry about that.

Now, if he comes on and denies it, then we got him! These comments about my secret Christianity are very amusing. I just can't handle the "wonder of life" syndrome.
