Any thoughts?"
The story of Jonah demonstrates God's mercy (with a wicked city called Nineveh):
"And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not."
Jonah 3:10
The story also shows the attitude of anger/resentment that people may have at the thought of God being merciful to certain people(s):
"But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil."
Jonah 4:1-2
It appears that Jonah did not want the people of Nineveh to be spared.

Jonah 3:10 above states that "they turned from their evil way". For how long? I don't know. It was atleast long enough to spare them from:
"...Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown."
Jonah 3:4
