Re: God's judgment
The Old Testament, which was "given for our admonition" even to those who believe in Christ, shows in prophecy after prophecy and event after event that God brings judgment against nations for their sins against His Laws, and often for the worshipping of the demon gods. Knowing the exact causes of particular calamities is not possible for us.
If we can't know the exact cause of the calamity, it's not a particularly effective lesson, is it?
It's similar to a man smacking his wife. When she asks why, he says, "'cause."
And how do we know when something rises above the usual, normal disaster into something that is a judgement on a nation? If 200 people die, is that a judgement or just a tragedy? If there are widespread forest fires, but no one dies, is that a judgement on the nation? Or the nation's trees maybe?

one man's catastrophe is another man's calamity
If you know the Old Testament it's easy enough to know how the nation is out of God's will. Abortion certainly for one instance. I think not consistently applying the death penalty is another. Legalized gambling. Any time the nation legalizes what God calls a sin we are in trouble. We don't need to know specifics in each catastrophe.
I think I understand. If it weren't for those abortionists, I wouldn't have just stubbed my toe. What a catastrophe that was. I'm just grateful God gave us all a sign that the nation is out of control.

Exd 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
As a literalist, you must get really busy around Halloween time. They're everywhere.

Re: The laws in question
Yes, witches are now just nice people who appreciate nature, and sorcery is just fun. With that pretty idea we casually allow every kind of demonic thing to influence people and take possession of their minds. Few have any sense of the dangers involved to them from the demonic spirits who are the power behind these things. Perhaps God will give us a revival in which many of them see the truth. In that case I think exorcisms might become necessary.
Why are you waiting for God to give us a revival? God has already told you what to do with these people. So if you encounter someone who deals in witchcraft, do you kill them as is God's decree? Or do you defy Him with your intellect?

Re: The laws in question
Of course, 'witch' is a poor translation.
No doubt.
It is refering to someone who 'Deals with the spirits of the dead'. Such people would be those who channel, and those folks on the sci-fi channel that 'talk to the dead'..
Wouldn't that, by necessity, include Christians who pray to Jesus? Now I'm confused.

Re: The laws in question
As far as I can see, you've hemmed and hawed about not being sure whether these rules apply outside of a theocracy.
Sounds like trusting your own intellect kind-of talk to me.
