It seems to be as I suspected: the Black Lives Matter movement is just a clever cover for criminal hooliganism. As if violent 'protests' weren't enough...
Black Lives Matter Activists Commandeer Sanders Speech In Seattle
O'Malley Booed as He Points Out: 'White Lives Matter. All Lives Matter.'
Seeing stuff like this really makes me glad I'm not a black American with real social problems requiring real solutions. Because one thing is certain: this nonsense will solve no problems and only cause more difficulty.

Real Problems Need Real Solutions
Too bad for them.
Because on my side are reforms for funding public education that don't leave the most disadvantaged children going to the poorest schools. On my side are good paying jobs that allow fathers to provide for their children instead of running away leaving Mom to raise the babies. On my side are communities that engage young folks instead of letting them become drug addicts.
On my side are actual solutions to the real problems that face African Americans, other minorities, and the poor in general.
Now I know it's not the lawless, anarchy nonsense of groups like Black Lives Matter or Al Sharpton, eagerly waiting for the next tragedy to get him more screen time, but I can live with that. Because these movements offer no solutions, and their disregard for law and order only puts them against the folks who can help and deepens the enmity felt toward them by already-prejudiced people.
These movements will ensure the continued paucity of inner-city education, the continued high rates of unemployment and broken families, and the continued reliance on drugs and alcohol by people trying to escape their miserable existences. So I'm fine not being on that side, ringo.
In fact I'm rather perplexed by the people who do support such movements like Black Lives Matter and wish such horrible fate on so many folks just 'cause they're black. That I cannot figure out.

Re: Real Problems Need Real Solutions
Even if you claim you have the best interests of black people at heart, you don't come across as "on their side" if you attack other people who are on their side.
Typical nonsense from you, ringo. Just like supporting women's rights doesn't involve supporting the 'rights' of mothers to mutilate their daughters, supporting the rights of African Americans to have better lives does not mean supporting everything every black person anywhere might believe.
Some black folk, just like some white folk, just don't have a clue in hell how to improve the lot of African Americans, and we have no reason to support their nonsense.
Jon writes:

Don't a lot of black people support those movements?
If so it is to their detriment.
I suppose they are no different than the poor people living off Social Security and food stamps who vote Republican.

So you have no counter argument and offer no real solutions.
Got it.
Thanks.

Re: Real Problems Need Real Solutions
No counter argument from you either, eh?
How 'bout you show the efficacy of the Black Lives Matter movement? Show how police shootings of black folks have been on the decline; show how incarceration rates for African Americans has been on the decline; show the increase in graduation rates of blacks in areas where BLM has been active; or really demonstrate the effectiveness of BLM on any meaningful measure of success.
Why don't you offer something other than irrelevant and baseless accusations of racism and blind support for a demonstratively unsuccessful effort to improve the lives of U.S. blacks?

Re: Real Problems Need Real Solutions
But to complain that black people should be nice and quiet and stop making waves and instead just ask politely is to dismiss their lives.
Not the point I'm making.
You should try again.

Re: Real Problems Need Real Solutions
You're right that protests and civil (and even uncivil) disobedience can be hugely effective at bringing about change.
This is not true of BLM.

How Real Change Has Been Effected
One of the most sure-fire way to make black lives matter is to keep non-violent African Americans out of prisons, and dismantling the War on Drugs is probably the best place to start.
The case of Colorado is exemplary:
quote:
"Marijuana Case Filings Plummet in Colorado Following Legalization" from The Denver Post:
According to a Denver Post analysis of data provided by the Colorado Judicial Branch, the number of cases filed in state court alleging at least one marijuana offense plunged 77 percent between 2012 and 2013. The decline is most notable for charges of petty marijuana possession, which dropped from an average of 714 per month during the first nine months of 2012 to 133 per month during the same period in 2013 a decline of 81 percent.
That may have been expected after all, people over 21 can now legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana. But The Post's analysis shows state prosecutors also pursued far fewer cases for marijuana crimes that remain illegal in Colorado.
For instance, charges for possessing more than 12 ounces of marijuana dropped by 73 percent, and cases alleging possession with intent to distribute fewer than 5 pounds of marijuana dipped by 70 percent. Even charges for public consumption of marijuana fell statewide, by 17 percent, although Denver police have increased their number of citations issued for public consumption.
. . .
Marijuana advocates, meanwhile, praised the drop in prosecutions even for things that remain illegal under state law because it lessens what they say is the racially biased impact of marijuana enforcement. A report last year from the American Civil Liberties Union found that blacks in Colorado were arrested for marijuana crimes at a rate nearly double that of whites. Overall, the report found arrests for marijuana possession in 2010 made up more than 60 percent of all drug-offense arrests.
"We're talking about not only saving the state time and money," said Art Way, a policy manager in Colorado for the Drug Policy Alliance, a supporter of legalization, "but we're no longer criminalizing primarily young adults, black and brown males primarily, with the collateral consequences of a drug charge."
A bunch of mile-high stoners have done more that matters to black lives than the folks of BLM could ever hope to.
BLM has failed, and will continue to fail, because what it tries to accomplish has nothing to do with its ultimate goal of improving the lives of black Americans.

Re: Real Problems Need Real Solutions
You still offer nothing.
If you could demonstrate the effectiveness of BLM on even one issue capable of actually improving the live of African Americans, you would have done so by now.

Re: Real Problems Need Real Solutions
It's not only that they haven't been effective; it's that they never will be.
Their goal is to make black lives matter. Have you read their list of demands?
Similarly, the legislation you're demanding to see the obvious benefits from was signed into law 37 days ago. Patience might seem reasonable.
I don't expect a list of statistics; but I think anyone suggesting that the legislation will make black lives matter might be able to show the mechanism by which it would do that.
