Racism can be conscious or subconscious. It is largely formed through a cultural construct. My Niece is a white girl.(well, she is actually 35...no longer a wee Lass) and she grew up quite innocent in Kirkwood and Webster Groves, Missouri. She knew next to nothing about the dynamics of the inner city---which is culturally unique based on whatever City one lives in. For example, Denver, where I live, has an inner city population that is represented fairly equally by caucasians, blacks and Latinos. We have a slight edge in Latinos, whereas a city such as New Orleans is largely black as is St.Louis. My Niece now teaches in Ferguson, Missouri.
St.Louis has had a distinct history of racism and prejudice---being neatly divided along class (and racial) lines that have remained largely unchanged in 150 years. My Niece has learned quite a lot about the culture in St.Louis.
