Christ's Message

What is Christ's message and what is wrong with it?
From what I understand, Christ's message is basically:
"Do unto others as you would have done to you".
(Treating others as you want to be treated)
Although much better than "an eye for an eye" mentality, the problem with this simplistic statement is that sometimes other people do not want to be treated as you want to be treated.
Something more along the lines of:
"Do unto others according to their wishes"
...would be better.
Inquiring about how people would want to be treated is an important factor when doing something that affects those same people.
Seems like such a basic concept, when one is thinking about how best to live among others peacefully... too bad Jesus didn't get it quite right.
