Asbergers
Recently the radio shock jock Michael savage made the statement that autism was a fraud and that most autistic children were brats who needed to be repremanded (sometimes physically) by their fathers.
What an idiotic thing to say. While I agree that as of late, there is this big focus placed on autism, but that does not mean there is not a legitimate basis for it. Savage sounds like... well... a savage.
I have a co-worker who I strongly suspect has Aspergers Syndrome. The brass at my command has systematically tried to get him kicked out of the Coast Guard. While I agree that he should have been turned away initially, the reality is that he slipped underneath the radar and he is in now, and has done just fine for almost 8 years now.
He does not have what it takes to ever be in a position of leadership, and he understands that. However, he is one of my armorers and he does an exceptionally good job. He is extremely proficient at what he does, and is pretty much a walking encyclopedia when it comes to small arms.
He is fine with not advancing further than his current rank. He understands that his condition precludes him from advancing. But if he is content on finishing his tour at his current rank, why not let him do just that? His condition is not that much of a problem. And it pisses me off that the command has tried to blackball him and make him jump through ridiculous hoops in an obvious attempt to get rid of him. Its b.s. and it needs to stop.

Re: Savage Is Not A Savage
Twice during two different shows there were case workers who called into the show and wholeheartedly confirmed Savage's concerns.
Well, I trust your judgment over the media's any day of the week. I should have known they would manipulate anything in order to invent a story out of nothing. So I will tentatively retract my previous statement. Thanks for clarifying, brother

Re: Asbergers
If he where diagnosed with Aspergers or some other form of autism, he could possibly get some legal protection from that kind of harassment. But then again i dont know for sure nor do i know the inner workings of the military.
Unfortunately, while in the military, you can't sue them per contractual agreement. Somebody else can sue on your behalf, however. You can also file grievances, but going up against some Brass may get yourself in a sling.
I have some similarities to Asperger's syndrome even though i am diagnosed PDD-NOS (Not otherwise Specified). With Autism you can have problems with social skills (I have two books at home for Autistic people to do well in social envoronments). If he has some type of Autism, then such social problems combined with military life could cause some issues to arise.
That is precisely what is going on with him. While he is sociable, he lacks the same kind of common sense or sense of humor that most every one else would adapt to. But he is incredibly intelligent and very knowledgeable. He is respectful and meticulous, but he lacks social graces. He also seems largely incapable of thinking outside of the box. He is good at remembering the rules and regulations, but can't seem to grasp why such rules and regulations were instituted in the first place. So he tends to see things in black and white as a result. He therefore can never be in a position of leadership, at least not militarily.
But like I said, he is content to stay at his current rank and to continue doing what he does. It suits him because he is a creature of habit, which no doubt his condition has something to do with it. I say they should let him stay in.
