I am leaning in the direction of separate species, with little to no inter-breeding, at least with neanderthals. This is due to the differences in mitochondrial DNA, human and neand mitDNA is quite different. If maternal lines crossed, we would expect the variation of neand mitDNA and human mitDNA to overlap, but instead they are quite separate. Humans and cro-mag, maybe. Does anyone know of any mitDNA sequences for cro-mag? That might be interesting.
