It would seem to me that the domain name would come from the website name, if only to make it easy to remember how to get there.
Since this is your software, and it's kind of an offshoot of this website, do you have any stipulations on the name? Do you want to keep it as a debate (X vs Y) site, or more of a discussion site? Or are these questions that you're leaving open to whoever ends up running it?

But I do have opinions. About debate versus discussion, it seems it could go either way. There's the conservative/liberal dichotomy that parallels creation/evolution, but in general there seems a greater variety of possible positions and views in politics. Quite true. One big difference in politics is that people can reside in many different camps depending on the topic as presented, whereas with Creation and Evolution, there are many flavors to creation and a couple for evolution, but people tend to be on one side or the other. I guess it would sort of end up being more of a discussion...much like the faith forums here. As for the name of the website, for some reason I kind of like PvP, The Prince versus The Pauper.

Another thought that occured to me: you could kind of keep the EvC "brand" and just call it "EVC Politics", or something similar. We could even have a little competition to see if some of the more creative posters could come up with what the EVC stands for as far as politics is concerned.

Did I miss something or did someone address why this is a problem for EvC such that it needs a seperate board? Well, the politics gets relegated to the coffeehouse because the board is designed and focused on science and religion. Politics will creep in, inevitably, but since we have no good place to put political discussions that only tengentially, or not at all, touch on the EvC debate, it makes sense to expand to another forum. Personally, I think the two fora should be very closely twined, such that getting from one to the other is a simple click of a link on every page. It also makes sense from a development standpoint. If Percy wants to work out his Forum software, it helps to have more than one "experiment" running. Politics will attract different people, with different interests and different perspectives on the software. It will also give prospective buyers of the software more than one example to look at. Keeping them closely linked makes sure our community doesn't fragment, and keeping the "brand" the same (as I suggested above) would help in that regard, as well as making the connection obvious for the aforementioned buyers.

Thanks for offering to pitch in. Anytime. I like politics as much as I like science, and I love this forum software, so being able to help expand it to one of my other loves would be awesome.
If some of this doesn't make sense, don't worry, it's actually easy and I'm available to answer any questions. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions, if this ends up in my hands, but I'm a quick study.
I'm going with "http://www.politicusmaximus.net" unless I hear a better name by tonight, or unless someone wants more time to think up names. Are you itching to pull the trigger on this right now? I think a little time for people to come up with names is warranted, Politicus Maximus does have a nice ring to it, but if it's used for a blog already, we may become confused with the other, and some may assume a connection between the two.

About EvC branding, I'd prefer not to associate the two sites. Ok, works for me. In that case, feel free to strike with as warm an iron as you desire. I kind of like NosyNed's ideas as well.

Just the word Spectrum would be a good title. It' indicates the full spectrum of political ideologies one can find, but also the community of people itself who come from a whole spectrum of places and backgrounds.

I like this one too.

I completely agree. Considering we have a very large, non-American contingent, and I would hope that stays true on any other fora that come out of EvC, I'd think making it seem America-centric would be a disservice.
Also, even within America's political spectrum, people can reside in many different positions depending on the specific topic, making it all but impossible to shoehorn someone into a mold. If we can avoid even the suggestion of doing so, I would consider that a positive.

Be assured that if you intend to have a lively political cite, you will shoot your own foot if you limit left/right ideological input. I'm not trying to limit anything, I'm just against syaing, "This is a left versus right board." Since people can live at multiple places along the spectrum...and many political discussions fall off that spectrum and instead live on the libertarian/authoritarian spectrum, that could be what limits debate. People can shoehorn themselves all they want, I'd just be against the site itself trying to do it from the get go.

Forums at EvC are divided into several categories: science, religion, etc. Categories for politics could be chosen in more than one way, but one approach I like is geographical, e.g., American politics, European politics, global politics, etc. Geographical makes sense, but there was also a suggestion earlier about economics, political philosophy, etc that would be more of a generalized sort. I see a potential problem with geographical divisions in that people from one geographical region may not bother with the other regions, making the community fractured. Maybe not, you're the one who's run one of these things.

I was trying to come up with something similar, and as BMG said, a Current Events area might be warranted, maybe even as a category all itself?
I say, we try it this way, and if there are problems, it can always be adjusted or fixed.

I was thinking a color scheme similar to EvC, but with green instead of blue. I guess we'd have to see whether white or black text would show up better on green, but I don't want any sharp contrasts. As much as I like a red/black scheme, red can be overpowering, unless it's pastelized or turned to almost pink.
I'll see if I can come up with a title graphic myself, now that we've settled on a title, but I'm definitely open to ideas from others.

I'm not a graphic designer, and the tools here at work are less than exemplary, but here's my first attempt:

I've been playing around with apearance and forums/categories. I noticed one thing, though. On EVC's Forum page, it has the forums grouped by category, and the link at the top of the page says, for example "Board Administration => Suggestions and Quesitons"
On PM, it only says the forum name, even though I have created and assigned category names.
