Re: Point two is not factual.
Secular sources are limited, but the accusations levied against Christians tended to be incest and bizarre rituals that included child sacrifice, not dishonesty, drunkenness, selfishness, or any sort of moral flaws that could be seen by neighbors. I think you'll find that Christians of the 2nd century were described as quiet, minding their own business, and honest. With some hunting, I could find quite similar descriptions of the 16th century Anabaptists, the 13th century Waldensians ("The Poor"), and I would love to appeal to Franciscans at the time of St. Francis as well. Think you can go well before the 2nd. century, TL. Acts 2:41 + might give an ideal community of three thousand souls or more. Just how long before the pressure in Jerusalem started to tell is anyone`s guess. In a volatile country with overlords battling uprisings, I don`t think the Romans would let a sizable body remain detached for long.

Re: Point two is not factual.
In addition to truthlovers excellent quotes from other sources, the book of Acts records a time when faith produced what it was foretold to become. And then Paul popped in and succeeded in splitting the Nazarite movement

Re: Stepping in where perhaps I should not
Precisely, Jar. We admire people because they possess a quality or offer an example we`d like to aspire to. Shallow folk follow rock stars, sporting heroes, etc, but in search of the staff of life, we need something more substantial. If Christians were true to their publicity, we would find them role models and probably join their church. But what do we find in reality? Under the veneer, the same old bigoted, irascible people we are trying to leave behind.

Re: group vs individual
Absolutely. And for Christianity to succeed, we need to produce a whole series of individuals, each one of which so inspires you that you begin to wonder how they do it. Probably needs another thread, but care to nominate a few individuals so we can examine them? Second question: Why are there so few?

Re: group vs individual
It is precisely because certain individuals erupt above the norm { Bruce Lee,,John Bachar,John Lennon,Richard Feynman,Wilfred Owen} that we are inspired by their excellence in the fields of endeavour they are in. What is this Bruce Lee fetish, SL? I mean, apart from a 2 inch punch, what did he have going for him?

Crunch Test
So how do we recognise a 'real' Christian? Do we tell them by their fruits? Or resurrect the old snakes/poison test?

Re: You decide
Hi, Tl, you (the thread) are discussing who is a 'real' Christian. Therefore it was a general question to all sides.
