Do you suppose it would be possible to do with door-knocking bible thumpers what was done recently with telemarketers?

sidelined,
Well, there is at least one thing that can be done by a homeowner: Simply put up a sign that says "No solicitors." It's sad that one needs to point out violations of etiquette, but this is such a minor thing that it isn't very significant. Me? I happen to live in a gated community...I never answer the door unless I'm expecting someone since you're not supposed to be able to get into the complex without a reason. I don't think there is a good parallel between the phone and the door. For some stupid reason, the phone companies have decided to charge people to set up their service to block callers who refuse to identify themselves. And unlike telephone calls which can originate from anywhere, a person has to physically come to your door. ------------------Rrhain WWJD? JWRTFM!

I was thinking more along the lines of a sign as a legalinjuction that states that you are no longer to be solicited as you have made your intentions clear to a central bible thumpers clearing house that you do not wish to be disturbed.Any violation of said document will be punishible by debate with atheists on this website. Oddly enough, even though I used to deal with tons of them a couple years ago I think they must have given up around here.Too many hopeless causes I guess.

Maybe it's an Irish thing, but I've never once had some one come to my house preaching. I've never been able to figure out why - not that I'm not really grateful ehough.
We do get evangelists on the street with loudspeakers reading the bible, but no one takes much notice.

No door-to-door evangelists in my neck of the woods (although that may be a by-product of apartment living.)
Many, many streetcorner evangelists in Chicago, though. Not a week goes by when there isn't at least one guy on a streetcorner either yelling or singing about Jesus. Sometimes the singing is nice, but the yelling and the bad singing really gets on my freakin' nerves. My favorite was the guy on the red line who was dressed up as the Tin Woodsman of Oz, (right down to silver face paint) and spent the whole ride yelling about Leviticus. He was either balls-out insane, or lost a bet. I was tempted to go argue the meaning of Leviticus with him, (even from a fundie literal interpretation, his ideas were riddled with errors) but decided it was not the best idea to go antagonize the man dressed as the Tin Woodsman who was screaming about abominations against God.

I simply wanted to get back on track. My post was actually an attempt at humor.
Anyway, it seems, now that we are on topic, that the immediate issue is the rightness or wrongness of preaching in a legal realm, unless I misunderstand. This is definitely something I will have to think about for a piece before formulating a response. Russ

I try to also. But there's that little voice in my head that says "How many times are you gonna have the opportunity to do this again?"
Of course, the big voice that says "don't be an idiot, Dan" usually wins out.

Preaching;right or wrong. Only as long as one is willing to put up with it! Seriously, as long as it is done with loving intentions and with the proviso that one can get up and leave without being ostracized or condemmed, it's fine with me. The street preacher in Mt.Airy, North Carolina can yell "Hell-Fire" all he wants to, but he can't expect me to listen. Hey! It's a free country man!

So it is a free country, would be happy for a Klan memeber to preach and scream their garbage in your streets?
Brian.

You preach bad news about the bible and Christ all the time Brian, do you not?
It seems a tad hypocritical of you.

There is a slight difference Mike, I don't scream like an idiot in the street about it and I certainly don't come to your door with it, well I might if I knew where you lived !!
Brian.

I think it's really an Irish thing. We're just too practical to take much notice of people yelling about abominations against god.
There's an idea - is preaching (or creationism in general) a predominantly American thing?
