I say their God here because every religion has some followers claiming to have met with their God.
However, most religions are exclusive in that if you do not believe in a certain set of core doctrine you are a heathen.
So you have this huge contradiction. Each religion has those who *ardently* believe they have a close relationship with God, or God talks to them, or the are being led by God; but at the same time they tie this god to a set of doctrine that is exclusive or even a jealous god, so someone is fooling themselves and others. Or maybe they are all right and it is a polytheist's world after all.

Don't you think the supreme being that created all the mountains & rivers & forests, planets, stars & galaxies would be noticed when he spoke?
Sometimes the implied assumptions need to be examined. Why is it always believed that God is subtle?
If there is some scripture that God wanted noted as "God breathed" why not carve it into a cliff or imprint a gigantic religious symbol in the moon or stars. We are talking about the being who gave the galaxies a spin.
In a similar manner, people of most religions claimed to be healed or have administrated healing. These healings are usually of a subtle nature. Not a single case of missing limb been restored. Why does God not heal amputees? Why is that?

All philosophies and religions are exclusive... especially the polytheistic ones.
You start off wrong!
Not all religions are exclusive - Buddhism comes to mind.
There are even Christians who are nonexclusivist (and necessarily nonliteralist). The EvC user Jar here comes to mind.
You spend way too much time building strawmen and then tearing them apart - which is what you do with the rest of your post.
But in the process you make some absurd claims...
scottness writes:
But to call something evil is to exclude it from being true! For if anything is the heart of evil it is falsehood.
Huh? Let me try I will claim that...
"Killing a fellow human in the name of God is evil"
Now does that exclude it from being true. Not all that is evil is false. OFF TOPIC. Please get back to the original topic.

Yes it is... Killing in the name of God is false
So the Old Testament god is false (and by your own pronouncement evil).
Very clearly the children of Israel are commanded by god to kill and commit genocide. The OT god orders humans on several occasions to kill all: men, women, infants, sucklings.
scottness writes:
Does that mean Buddhists do welcome and include exclusive faiths like Christianity
You are mashing the term exclusive as it is being used. Exclusive religions hold to the belief that they follow the "One True God". Other views of God are are false and incompatible. Buddhists do not hold to this belief.

How to tell the difference is a the problem you are having.
Yes most skeptics do have a problem getting a clear reading from god.
However history shows that the overtly religious don't have much difficultly - they are certain.
scottness writes:
Men killing in the name of God is...?
When a man says God told him to kill, what do you do?
Moses (a man) commanded in the name of the Lord in Exodus to kill...
Exodus 32 writes:
(Moses) stood at the entrance to the camp and shouted, "All of you who are on the LORD's side, come over here and join me." And all the Levites came. He told them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Strap on your swords! Go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other, killing even your brothers, friends, and neighbors." The Levites obeyed Moses, and about three thousand people died that day. Then Moses told the Levites, "Today you have been ordained for the service of the LORD, for you obeyed him even though it meant killing your own sons and brothers. Because of this, he will now give you a great blessing."

I don't think any atheist here would reject a sign from God. Actually it is quite the contrary, there is atheist because of the LACK of signs from God.
My apologies in advance for a (maybe a bad) parable. Most Atheist are like the young virgin that refuses to enter into a sexual relationship before marriage out of respect for their future mate who at the time do not know who that may be.
The same is true of the atheist or agnostic (a cowardly atheist) is that they don't just want to jump into bed with some attractive comfortable religion out of respect of the true God which the do not know.

Maps
This talk about maps and territory I don't think clarifies much.
Having spent a considerable amount of time in the bush and can attest having the wrong map is worse than having no map at all. Also, even misreading the correct map can be worse than having no map in all.

Re: Maps
So the opening number of the musical The Music Man "Ya Gotta Know the Territory" was actually a spiritual.
OK I get it. I will have to cogitate on that for while.
