Really outstanding discussion.

My own opinion is an admixture of both sides here, closer to holmes in some ways, to CS in others; despite the occasonal misstep, this exchange was absorbing and useful.

A frank exchange on an important topic between two articulate people is a pleasure to watch.

*Sigh* Whereas I'm reduced to taunting and insulting randman, mark24 manages to write a well-composed post explaining the fallacies of randman's "missing fossil argument". I'm glad someone is keeping a cool head (although it can't be all that much fun).

I've been impressed by this thread in general (well, much of it) and by Mark in particular and especially this post.

That is a gem by Parasomnium. I missed it first time around. I've seen the point made in passing, but never explicated with such magisterial thoroughness.
