For October, 2005 (as per previous months)(but my first time to get to do this ):
quotelease post your votes for the September, 2005, Posts of the Month here. Include author, forum name, thread name, post number, eg:
Name: Velvet Tongue
Forum: Biological Evolution
Thread: I'm no monkey
Post #: 17
A link to the message, and perhap a SHORT comment would also be nice. But, this is NOT a place to debate the referenced topic - so be nice.
I think that a fairly liberal use of this topic would be a good thing for indexing some nice messages that are otherwise doomed to be lost in the clutter. So, if you encounter a message that seems to say something of special substance, please give it a plug/reference in this topic.
New month, same old message and routine.

RASD does the math for probabilities
I'd say he does it once and for all.
He covers and gives excellent examples of the usual exampleserrors .
Note this one for future use!

Re: RAZD does the math for probabilities
Gosh, thanks Ned.
I have to thank Jacinto for the inspiration on the molecule calculation, but it is one I have been meaning to do ever since his post on this issue, this just seemed like an appropriate time.
Jacinto's post is

I see it has ruffled Faiths feathers too.

Annafan's vision of 'our' future
Message 19, by Annafan
A very well thought-out argument about the meaning of 'us', which could justifiably be called a statement about the meaning of life. What makes it really Post-Of-The-Month worthy is the delightful thought experiment which advances the central idea in a crystal clear manner while at the same time giving us a breathtaking vista on a future that simultaneously is and isn't 'ours'.
Very well done!

Re: Annafan's vision of 'our' future
Oh, I'm flattered! Many nice words in this little tribute. "The meaning of life", no less! And "breathtaking vistas" aren't too bad, either. lol
Thanks!
The general idea that I express in that post has been growing slowly for several years. I guess it was waiting for the right moment to come out.

Quite enjoyable! Too bad the response will most likely contain the words "agree to disagree". Down with fascism! Down with uniculture!

Canadian Steve on Multiculturalism
He does a nice neat job of saying how it will destroy the West when it embraces anti-Western cultures.

holmes and CanadianSteve
Really outstanding discussion.
My own opinion is an admixture of both sides here, closer to holmes in some ways, to CS in others; despite the occasonal misstep, this exchange was absorbing and useful.
A frank exchange on an important topic between two articulate people is a pleasure to watch.

Probabilities aren't intuitive
While I was trying to read that particular thread, it felt like I was suffering from a permanent headache. I seemed chronically unable to pinpoint the actual issue.
Until I read Modulous' post, which sort of cleared it all up.

Phat pushes an opiate of the masses
Phat's post#20 in the Coffee House topic "Negative Effects of Religion".
I think Phat's been pretty interesting these days, and this one was rather brief but quite a defense, turning a slam of religion into and interesting sales pitch as if from the pharmaceutical industry.
I also liked his defense of where problems really come from even if they seemingly hit the religious harder.

Homespun wisdom from Texas:Sit a spell and listen up
Thanks, Holmes! I have a nomination of my own to give kudos to:
Name: Jar
Forum: Faith and Belief
Thread: "Thou shalls and Thou Shaints"
Post #: 4
Jar really has a way of taking theological issues and reframing them into good old sittin on the porch folk wisdom. This post is a good example of wisdom from Texas!

holmes' interpretation of Genesis

I like holmes' take on the Genesis myth. That one lesson one can take from it is that death and suffering are the result of humans presuming to judge right and wrong as gods.
