Space, void of anything including no rays of any kind, elements of any kind, etc would be existing area/empty space into which things such as rays or matter, etc could become to exist either by the work of a creator or by expansion of existing things such as rays, matter, etc. If everything in the universe were somehow removed, absolutely everything, a universe of infinite empty area/space would still exist into which an infinite amount of things could be put
This is the area where you seem to be confused old man.Let us investigate. If you somehow found your consciousness floating around without the usual body with brain to house it,{a ludicrous idea of course}in as you say a ? devoid of anything how does one determine there is any space around you? How would you determine it was finite or infinite?
You have forgotten that a truly empty universe would be devoid of dimension. No length, width, depth or time because there is no means by which one could measure emptiness because that is the nature of emptiness! This is the difficulty that one faces in contemplation of origin. When the universe began it necessitated the creation of space and also time since they are inextricably linked.
What occurs at the initial instant is not yet something we can resolve scientifically. It may indeed be that no amount of investigation will allow us to crack that secret but we do have good cause to be confident of the process by which we are uncovering the secrets that we can.
Big questions are not easily resolved unless one goes and gives up investigating and says why bother. Or one may fall back upon belief in God as origin and not even attempt the further questions that arise such as where did God come from? That question is never satisfactorily answered by people who believe either.

Well then, please define space.
I am at this moment reading a book. Relativity: The Special and the General Theory. It is published by Three river press and sells for 8.95 U.S. In it you will find the proper understanding of how things like position and space are best defined in order to clarify how science is able to learn things that give real insight into the nature of the universe.
It is not a hard book and the math is kept to a minimum. The author does his best to explain in clear terms just what is meant by each of the equations used and allows you to gain a grasp of the physical picture behind it. Give it a try and see if it helps.
