I don't like the sound of that!
The only question is which other party she will have to be in coalition with.
She?!

Re: Oh Yeah?
Why do you think the US election gets so much media coverage around the world?
Because our elections matter globally. The US runs the world. What would be the point of any American getting involved in the politics of Germany?

Re: Oh Yeah?
Same here. Especially when I already live in a blue state and I usually support (reluctantly) the blue candidates.
I would however vote if there was a third and/or fouth party that could actually have a chance. But since it's either blue or red, it doesn't really matter much to me. They both stink.

Re: Oh Yeah?
But that suggests that Germany as the policy maker for the Euro, lead country in the largest trading bloc in the world and the 4th largest economy doesn't matter globally.
I'm sure it matters in a financial aspect that really only interests rich people invested in the global economy. And yes that does eventually trickle down to affect the middle class, but it is so far removed that it is of no importance.
If that's the reason for disinterest then I think it underestimates Germany's world economic influence and overstates the US's as the be-all-and-end-all.
We are, but only because of our imposing military which has a base in damn near every corner of the world.
Germany matters in global economic terms.
But that s not something the average working class individual cares about.

Re: Oh Yeah?
The reason the rest of the world takes note of US elections is not just for military reasons. It's economic too.
You think the average working stiff in... Finland for example, cares about the US economy, or about what the US is doing around the world? Where do YOU think their actual focus is on?
In terms of elections (because China doesn't have them) Germany is arguably the next most significant player in that respect.
When in the history of Germany did the world pay attention to what was going on in Germany? Now, that they are the "most significant player in that respect" or during WWII when they were causing wars around Europe?

Re: Oh Yeah?
Are you suggesting that the reason the rest of the world takes such an interest in American elections is purely dowjn to US war mongering?
I'm saying countries that make loud noises get the attention of the world. The US involvement, in a military fashion, across most continents does bring us into the public eye more so than if we ONLY had a global economical impact.
Germany was such a case during WWII. As you can see from here, not just from Americans but from Canadians and 'others', not so much anymore when their contribution is solely economical.
When it comes to economics, people tend to care more about local issues than global ones.
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get many Svandanavian "stiffs" proclaiming that any election in which they don't vote is completely irrelevant.
We have no way of knowing that.
Whilst that point of view seems to be rather widespread amongst North American EvC members.
Germany is irrelevant to our daily lives. For example, we here would care about election in Venezuela when Hugo was in power. And look how much attention the little island of Cuba received. Loud noises = media attention.
