Re: relgion does not equal insanity
Well, there is no doubt that belief in a Young Earth can only be held by denying reality. It is a series of handwaving denials, not just one but absolute willfull ignorance.
The questions are whether that is a mental disorder or not, and if it is a mental disorder, is it treatable?
Is it caused by some change in environmental conditions, a virus, some genetic birth defect?
The big issue right now would be on how such mental aberrations should be dealt with. As long as it is a personal quirk, there really isn't much of a problem. When it expands to trying to impose their aberration on others it becomes a societal problem and must be addressed.

Solutions?
Yes, jar. Let me suggest that we be imprisoned in a dark dungeon. perhaps tortured on the rack. I understand that was very effective for getting people over their delusions. Or they died, but what the heck, win a few, lose a few.
How absolutely absurd Faith. Please point out where I suggested that, or is that YOUR suggestion?
Perhaps an apology from you will be forthcoming.
I suggested nothing of the sort. I have nothing but compassion, pity and love for those so handicapped and hope that one day we will find a cure for their afflictions.
The issue is that the universe actually exists. Regardless of what one might believe, it is reality. And the reality is that it cannot be 5-10,000 years old. So, as much as one might like to believe it is young, the Universe itself says it is old.
Don't like that? Tough. That's the way it is.

belief vs denial.
He brings up what I am thinking about. I don't think there is anything insane about believing in something there is no evidence for (god, an afterlife, etc.). It's more about believing in things there is evidence AGAINST (young earth, global flood, bullets won't kill you)
That is the key to the issue.
Belief in something where there is no evidence, minimal evidence or even contradictory evidence is not insane. It often leads to those advances we have seen.
But believing in something where there is absolutely overwhelming evidence that it is wrong, runs right into reality. And reality has a way of winning every time.

Deciding what is real?
When you get older try telling that to your creditors.
