Temple Grandin
I just watched a movie the other day on HBO called Temple Grandin. It was about an autistic woman (Temple Grandin, hence the title) who was extremely in tune with cattle. She is responsible for revolutionizing the way in which they are led to slaughter, so it is done in a more humane way and so that they calmly march to their death. It really is a great flick. I highly recommend it.

"Some people think God is an outsized, light-skinned male with a long white beard, sitting on a throne somewhere up there in the sky, busily tallying the fall of every sparrow. Othersfor example Baruch Spinoza and Albert Einsteinconsidered God to be essentially the sum total of the physical laws which describe the universe. I do not know of any compelling evidence for anthropomorphic patriarchs controlling human destiny from some hidden celestial vantage point, but it would be madness to deny the existence of physical laws."-Carl Sagan

Re: Temple Grandin
How would we feel about an advanced alien that led us passively to our deaths by being autistically in tune with us as an intellectually inferior species?
lol.
Well, cattle are going to be eaten. That's what they are here for, what they are bred for, yes? The whole purpose of her research was for them to be as comfortable as possible, partially to minimize loss before the slaughter due to cow-hysteria. The other part was because she cared.
I don't think you can justifiably compare us to cattle, unless it turns out we ARE alien seed and we are their "experiment"

Re: Meat Morality and Human/Animal/Alien Rights
The difference is, though, (at least in my opinion) that we are so far gone as a society from the necessity of doing the actual killing, and we are brought up seeing how cute and fuzzy animals are, we don't really concern ourselves with where it comes from. I assure you, ask any farmer if he gives two winks about slaughtering one of his pigs for morning bacon and his answer will be an astounding "hell no". The same goes for anyone who lives in the country (sorry, not to stereotype: but I'm referring to Deliverence types here). We need meat. people have become too sissified/citified to do the killing nowadays.

Re: Meat Morality and Human/Animal/Alien Rights
People are no longer inured to the act of killing animals for meat.
People also thinks its gross to shit outside, in the woods (as we used to for tens of thousands of years). My old lady griped at me for letting my son piss from the dock at her moms house into the lake. I was raised in the country, so I am a little bit hill-billy.
But I would still suggest that they are in the minority.
I concur. However, it is not because there is anything wrong with it. It is because it is not a necessity anymore for individuals to procure their own food. That's what the supermarket and McDonalds is for, right?
I have seen evidence to the contrary.
I've not done sufficient reading into vegan lifestyle, other than what I have read saying that it's not exactly healthy and they need to take vitamins to make up for not getting enough protein and iron. I could be far wrong, though. I've nothing against the vegan lifestyle. To each his/her own, I say. I just couldn't do it. I am a meat and potatoes kinda fat guy.
{ABE} all I meant by it not being healthy is that it doesn't provide sufficient nutrients. Veggies are good for you lol.
You think that people that can't kill harmless animals are timid, cowardly and effeminate?
Yes, because given the chance, those harmless creatures would rip your face off to survive. You know, survival of the fittest and all. I believe that anything that can't outrun me, can't be speared/shot/bow and arrowed is food. If it can kill me, I better kill it first. And fast. If it can't, I guess I can save my energy.
Hmm...This ended up looking like an attack on you, Hooah.
I am not angry or shouting so please believe me - no offense is intended.
No worries mate. I have very thick skin. I appreciate a new perspective on things around here.

Re: Meat Morality and Human/Animal/Alien Rights
Not pooing on the street is good for the species. It discourages disease.
And I hate treading in dog poo - so if humans did it on the streets too then I'd probably be very peeved!
I said in the woods. I understand the purpose of not having shit flowing in the streets.
I have heard similar things about veganism. But vegetarianism doesn't have the same problems.
I thought they were the same thing...sorry.

Re: Meat Morality and Human/Animal/Alien Rights
Of course there are certain animals that we have no business eating. To echo some of what Jazz said, we ahve domesticated groups of animals for the purpose of consumption, just as we have domesticated animals for the purpose of labor (Mules). Would there be cattle if it weren't for us?
I'm all for animal conservation for extinct/exotic/rare animals. There are certain niches that need to be filled for certain ecosystems to be successful and we chouldn't screw with that.
Now, back to my steak......

Sorry.
I couldn't resist.
(Bolding is mine!)
Oops! I meant endangered. Thanks for pointing that out.
