The people who can legalize it think the only people who enjoy weed are "pot head stoner losers". Cheech and Chong done legalization a bit of a disservice by helping promote a negative stereotype. "No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...and if it occasionally gets a little heavier than what you had in mind, well...maybe chalk it off to forced conscious expansion: Tune in, freak out, get beaten." Why would they care about who is using the drug? The people who can legalize it think the only people who enjoy weed are "pot head stoner losers".Surely, they just want the money. Afterall, they are happy to sell Buckfast...
Buckfast 'in 5,000 crime reports' I am puzzled by their refusal to grab the cannabis cash-cow by both horns and shake every last "pot head stoner losers" dollar out of it.

Yes, I can see how the 'abstinence crowd' would be against cannabis. I think so and to some extent the churches here in USA have far too much influence in politics. Over here, in Europe, we don't have that excuse. The UK (for example) is quite secular - and we are strangely proud of our alcohol problems - but cannabis is still viewed with some disgust. We have had several public figures and scientists advocating it legalisation, but I expect them to be ignored. (The last government scientific adviser that suggested legalising drugs ended up being sacked - and his colleagues walked out with him.) Edited by Panda, : No reason given. Edited by Panda, : stuff...

The last government adviser that suggested legalizing drugs ended up being sacked. It would be political suicide here in the religious south to be an advocate. What I don't understand is why our govt wont allow it to be grown even for industrial uses? It, hemp, has been an important part of our history in the US up until shortly after WW2 or there about, I wonder what changed as far as allowing it to be used for fiber and as animal feed. Maybe the people who manufacture synthetics ect.. played a part in its demonetization. "No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. A friend of mine had a "horticulture experiment" in his 1 bedroom apartment's bedroom closet. He had seven plants which would have yielded between 9-14 ounces total. One night he got real drunk and put a pot on his stove to make some tea. He fell asleep before the tea and woke to the sound of his smoke alarm going off. He was trying to turn off the alarm when the police showed up. They told him to come outside because of the fire. He said there was no fire only a smoldering pot. The cop then walked into the apartment and forced him to leave. The fire department showed up and ventilated the apartment with a large fan. They then did a room to room sweep and discovered his "horticulture project". The cop put him in his cruiser and said that the fire fighters found something, and asked if he cared to comment. My friend stayed silent. This went on for about 2 hours very late at night with rotating officials claiming that he could, "do this the easy way or the hard way". The whole time he remained silent. After several hours they let him go and said they would be in contact in the next few months. That was about 7 weeks ago and he still has no word from them or his lawyer. This guy is in his mid twenties, has a decent job that he works 40hr/wk. He could be facing several years in prison and fines for something that use to grow naturally on almost every continent. The city/county/state tax payers will spend 10's of thousands of dollars to investigate, prosecute, and house him in a prison....not to mention the loss of his wages and productivity at work. This is not the 1st of people I know in trouble, nor will it be the last. This really has gotten out of hand. Police like to bust pot growers/dealers because they are typically less violent and easier to deal with and in turn, justify their ballooning budgets, but at the same time it takes away resources from real issues that they could be dealing with.

The same goes for medicinal uses. What I don't understand is why our govt wont allow it to be grown even for industrial uses? You can be prescribed Methadone (which is as bad as heroine) but you can't be prescribed cannabis. fearandloathing writes:

I am sure there is more than one piece to the puzzle, and that sounds like one of them. I just Google to to learn a bit more and found a little on it, cant vouch for the source, but it would be easy to check the facts if one wanted to. Sound just about right to me.
source quote: What it goes on to explain is how hemp would've been unwanted competition for several industries and how the powers that be made sure that wasn't going to happen "No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. What I don't understand is why our govt wont allow it to be grown even for industrial uses? Well a guy a few moths back started growing industrial marihuana no THC wit permits and everything perfectly legal, the cops seized his plants and started to prosecute him even though he was showing them the papers, now he is suing the state for his lost plants, profit and harassment. A few weaks ago a guy was arrested for growing plants in his house he had a little more then 2000 plants in his house has been growing them for years and was located 100 meters from the police station. Maybe they are afraid that your cops would be as stupid as ours

TBH: That whole story sounds weird. Something else was going on, maybe.

Something else was going on, maybe. Hi guy!
[GONZOJOURNALISM] It is so illogical that there must be a less obvious reason. I think William Seward Burroughs , author of the incomparable Naked Lunch, may have been on the right track (in his case it was the issue of Heroin) that the Government is IN ON THE DEAL. Like Sherlock Holmes advises, when you systematically eliminate all the more likely explanations, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. Why would these very same people that own & run such a system of illegal trafficking and thuggery and unabated murder that has done so much for them suddenly decide to throw it all away??? You make marijuana legal and tax it like cigarettes and you lose your market share - now you have to throw your cash received into the tax system with all of its bullshit. Shit - now some of your hard-earned shekels might wind up in a highway improvement project in Boston and land in their money-grubbing hands. The few that run the system and are well ensconced in the government power niches would have too much to lose. You might as well ask them to give up the holy oil. There is a possibility that they are merely still waiting for Monsanto (or equivalent assholes) to secure a molecular DNA patent on a genetically modified marijuana for the government to use and get legislation passed that: 1) Only permits Monsanto's patented strain of Cannabis sativa to be sold, and 2) heavily fines, jails or even allows corporate security forces to kill outright, on sight, any citizens who even accidentally grow the corporate patented form, despite it blowing in the wind over the heavily electrified, barb-wire fences patrolled by stealth black helicopters overseeing the Monsanto Corporation's millions of acres, and 3) makes it a High Crime of Treason to organize or promote demonstrations against Monsanto. I can see Dick Cheney, no doubt even more of a major stockholder and board member by then, but now on a high-tech expensive life support system provided by the otherwise bankrupt and fraudulent health care system for Federal politicians, enthusiastically applauding this concept through his voice synthesizer "I've always been in favor of legalizing it. I'm so fortunate to see it happen in my own lifetime." Another observation from Sherlock Holmes that is applicable is from The Adventure of the Silver Blaze. Sherlock tells Scotland Yard to remember the curious incident of the barking dog. There was no barking dog - because it was an inside job.

Firstly, this famous quote is actually fallacious. Like Sherlock Holmes advises, when you systematically eliminate all the more likely explanations, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. It is an 'argument from ignorance': "I cannot think of any other reason - therefore it must be true". The rest of your post appears to be referencing something I am unfamiliar with and should not be taken at face value.Maybe I am simply tired, but currently I am not entirely sure what the point is that you are trying to make. Sorry.

WOW.... okay I inadvertantly deleted my first reply*...it went something like this: Sherlock Holmes, via his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was using clear logic in the episode, which I think was "The Adventure of The Yellow Face", if memory serves me well. Sherlock was a fictional clinical objective dude who could cut through strangeness. You have a lot of nerve to belittle his conclusion in the adventure. This is more like a testament to the way that the hard, cold, objective evidence can lead you to narrow things down to a very unusual result.

Thompson * Percy? make all Replies open a new window? Pretty pretty please? And have the PEEK option as well a click, since "Reply with Quote" has been mercifully discontinued, if I understand the difficulties.- xongsmith, 5.7d

All I can think of is some kind of cultural brainwashing that makes people think that dope is worse than alcohol. We have a winner! I've never had any idea why such a pernicious drug like alcohol is viewed as morally fine, but weed is evil.

Well if Jesus turned some cabbage into weed at that weeding or instead of a bowl of wine he passed on a joint at the last supper then the tables might have been turned and alchohol would be the evil drug.
