An organism can't make use of a mutation that gives it sensory information as for instance photosensitive cells as to have an advantage over another organism without that mutation, if it has not already developed a brain with the capacity to process that information.
As others have pointed out with reference to plants and jellyfish, that is simply not true.
I thought I'd offer you some other food for thought: did you know that iguanas have a third eye on the top of their head? Its rudimentary and not really for "seeing" but allows them to sense light and shadows above them. Its called a parietal eye, here's a link:

Have fun learning!

How do you feel about sea urchins?
Very carefully...

evolution makes sense
quote:
Welcome to EvC!
You ask, "Can sense organs like the eye really evolve?"
Well, they DID - we see them all around us in the animal kingdom, in a couple of dozen configurations. So the answer must be, "yes, they can."
So because we have eyes today that means that they must have evolved? What evidence is there that natural selection can create an eye?
No, you missed the point. Here's the important part:
quote:

I italicized it.
What we have is a bunch of different types of eyes that are not related to each other. They utilize different mechanisms. All the creatures with one particular type are dissimilar to those with a different type. None of the groups with a particular type have creatures with a totally different type of eye. The evolutionary explanation is that of a nested hierarchy. All those creatures with the same eye type evolved from earlier creatures, and the particular utilized mechanism got built upon. It all makes sense and fits.
Do you have a better explanation? Why would a designer group the different eye types with specific creature groups (without one exception), in a manner that makes them look like they evolved independently?

Re: evolution makes sense
Can you show the evidence that natural selection can create an eye.
I can show you how the eyes evolved, yes. Can you exhibit that it wouldn't be a waste of my time?
Start by answering my questions...

So you AGREE that Silly Design Theory is the best explanation for the silly diversity of eyes, when a very small number of eye types should suffice?
      Yes
      No (explain).
No offense, RAZD, but I hate those check boxes. They're redundant and unnecessary, and ugly and annoying.

Whether you believe in evolution or not, evolutionary understanding has not advanced the cause of correcting defective vision.
That's because defective vision doesn't prevent people from reproducing. Evolution only needs you to be "good enough".
The new advances such as laser surgery for correcting detached retinas and for correcting vision are all human designed advancements negating any future evolutionary changes.
No, even with surgical corrections, the genes for those bad eyes will still get passed on. Future evolution changes are NOT negated. You'd have to modify your genome for that.
Evolution has in essence evolved its way out of existence.
Not quite. There'd still be sexual selection. It isn't "out of existence", its just different selective pressures. Too, you never know when there's going to be an environmental change that could throw a total curveball that causes the more familiar selective pressures to once again take over.
But this is all besides the topic:
Its obvious that sense organs like the eye can, indeed, evolve. Dontcha think?

Re: Eyes, Remember?
What evidence exactly would you expect to see if evolution were true?
I'm getting the sense that they really do expect for us to providing evidence of the scallop eye evolving into the squid eye and the squid eye evolving into the human eye, as if that's what the ToE suggests.
I think they really are that clueless...
quote:
It also doesnt make sense to observe different types of eyes in nature and claim that they present an evolutionary sequence.
the different types of eyes, in an evolutionary sequence
The stupid, it burns.
