Is it ok to remove an offensive depiction of the cross? Sure, and it'd be ok to remove this cross. Too, it would have been ok to keep that one your referring to and its ok to keep this one. I'm against the claim that this cross must be removed and that it violates the seperation of church and state.

I guess, in all honesty, that I don't want to see the WTC cross becoming the focus of the memorial. I would find that offensive, it wasn't a Christian tragedy...it was a tragedy for all of mankind.

My history lessons say 1.1 million gave their lives to defend their beliefs against Rome, which was indeed the greatest sacrifice in recorded history. Care to mention the verse reference of that in the Gospels?

I don't want to see the WTC cross becoming the focus of the memorial. As far as I can tell the only ones making it the "focus" are the ones pissing and moaning about it. That's a national focus that will give the cross power and meaning beyond its due. I think the American Atheists have shot themselves in the foot engaging in a worthless losing high profile battle and have done the rest of us atheists no damn good at all. Does anyone have a layout of the museum and the memorial garden? Where is this cross located?

Do the experts in the field see artistic value in the Smithsonian piece? Yes. Should it be displayed? Yes. Except.......the second christians cry foul, they get their way immediately."Why don't you call upon your God to strike me? Oh, I forgot it's because he's fake like Thor, so bite me" -Greydon Square

There is no alternative to humanity being governed by magestic laws instead of names. This is the true meaning of being monotheists. Christianity and Islam are in polar contradiction of each other, assuring only disaster ahead, and this insanity is only because of preferred names, which have become transcendent of the Creator. If one examines what is great about America - this is limited to the fact her constitution based itself on laws - it is thereby the savior of Christianity - saving it from medevial Europe. This is also the message from the greatest event in the universe, which was and is Sinai.
That is the message to all groups of humanity, from atheists, buddhists, muslims, communists, creationists, evolutionists, whoever and whatever. Its not a multi-choice option; don't start such a thread because you will loose.

Except.......the second christians cry foul, they get their way immediately. Which is why it's ridiculous. Spineless curator? Spineless director? Maybe given the political climate in Washington with those Tea Party mooks running roughshod over the House the Smithsonian feared for its funding? It's still ridiculous and should not have been pulled.

The difference being: the exhibit Fear linked to is privately funded. The WTC museum? Not so much.

But of couse I said nothing of the sort. Oh, of course not. You've only said that this object "helped people" in a non-religious capacity. And when pressed, you repeat yourself. "People were helped". In what way was this object "helpful" to people? The answer you don't want to give:"Because Christians saw it and knew that their God caused this death and destruction and so they were overjoyed". Great. Fantastic. You worship a demon. Good for you. Take you letter T home and put it on a wall.

The difference being: the exhibit Fear linked to is privately funded. The WTC museum? Not so much. Not so big a difference. If the experts with the knowledge of such things assess the value then censorship of any sort, whether from government or from public outrage is not warranted. That is the ideal, anyway. The political realities can be quite different. But you have got to pick and choose your fights for maximum advantage. This WTC fight is a loser and just gives the religionists more reason to claim we are trying to destroy religion. Which is true and a good thing when we can win, but, this one is a backfire. Not good. Edited by AZPaul3, : spelin agin

My history lessons say 1.1 million gave their lives to defend their beliefs against Rome, which was indeed the greatest sacrifice in recorded history. Care to mention the verse reference of that in the Gospels? WTF does this have to do with the topic?????? Out of all your post in this thread does any of them deal with the topic??? I am at a loss for finding anything relevant about anything you have said so far."No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. If the experts with the knowledge of such things assess the value then censorship of any sort, whether from government or from public outrage is not warranted. I'm not talking about censorship. I'm talking about the fact that on the one hand, you have people who ARE, effectively, funding this cross and they are offended. Are they being listened to? Yea...in court. On the other hand, you have a privately funded piece (not, apparently, funded by the Catholic League, either) complain and it gets removed immediately because they cried about it. Yet it's the Atheists who are called cry babies and shit blowers or whatever names you lot have called them?"Why don't you call upon your God to strike me? Oh, I forgot it's because he's fake like Thor, so bite me" -Greydon Square

I put it to you that had the controversy been about a law rather than a symbol, the issue would have been resolved via debates and votes from appointed representatives. While a law can be measured of its benefits or failures, a symbol can do no wrong or only wrong, with immunity and impunity. This is what history says.

I'm not talking about censorship. But I am. What the Am Atheists are trying is censorship. And because here in the USA such crap is wrong we will lose this fight and this fight will lose us standing!
... it gets removed immediately because they cried about it. Not my doing. If I were Emperor that would not have happened.
Yet it's the Atheists who are called cry babies and shit blowers or whatever names you lot have called them? "you lot"? I AM NOT one of "you lot"! Wake up hooah. We are not going to win this battle and it will make our struggle to win the hearts and minds of the society even harder. It's a bad deal all around. Penny wise, pound foolish! It sucks! But I am. What the Am Atheists are trying is censorship. No, they were asking to have other items displayed along with the WTC cross in order to balance the display. You know so that it wasn't just a memorial for Christians.
