Thanks Percy,
Either way is fine with me ... it just seemed to not work the same way it did before. Perhaps if I'd spent more time playing around with it I'd have saved myself some time ... Have a good one. Adminnemooseus, in message 295, writes: Prepare for a new onslaught of Adminnemooseus complaints about worthless topic subtitles. The replied to message is an example of continuing to use a subtitle that no longer ties to the message theme. Ideally, the message subtitle should have become something like "The red "minus" icon denoting a suspended member". Adminnemooseus ps: I note that using the code still doesn't work when inside the opening [qs] code. I tried using it to make the "message 295" a clickable link.

I propose the option of controls that permit an individual member to post to an individual topic no more often than every X minutes. This would apply to all members equally. Offhand, I think X=15 minutes would be a good number.
This will prevent the rapid fire of short messages and encourage fewer but better messages. It would suppress topics being turned into chat lines. It might slow down run-away topics, giving members a chance to read what others are posting rather than just racing to post another reply. Of course, all kinds of option variations could be built in. I've just changed my avatar back to the "Hiss" version, from the "Squeak" version.
Using the avatar "browse" button at the profile page allowed me to load the desired image, but no text appeared in the text box next to the button (or so I thought). When I clicked the "Update Avatar" button, the avatar change was done, although it took a refresh to get the correct one to actually display. I then went back to try doing the change again, and discovered that the text in the text box was apparently white on a white background - I could only see it via highlighting it. Firefox, Windows 7. All the major browsers have gradually over time upgraded their security regarding uploads from users' computers, and I've made accommodative changes as I've noticed issues. I'll take a look.

I can confirm Moose's story. I had the same thing when I changed my avatar. Although, it was a very light gray text, not as white as the background. Still hard to read though. Firefox, Windows XP.

The "index to certain important topics" window, apart from opening in a new window of its own, which is bad, has no wraparound of text at its right margin, and, more importantly, no scroll bar.

You're right, FF doesn't raise a vertical scroll bar if the window's too small, or a horizontal scrollbar either if it's too narrow. Don't know why this strange behavior, I'll see what I can figure out. Or you could switch to Chrome where it works.
You can still scroll using PageUp, PageDown, the arrow keys and the space bar. What is it about the popup window that you don't like? Edited by Admin, : Correction.

What is it about the popup window that you don't like? Its existence. It should open in a new tab, not a new window.

Oh, another thing.
Often just after I've hit the reply button and I try to copy a bit of the post to reply to, what I end up with on my clipboard is the whole post plus the thing I copied. It seems to "helpfully" put the post I want to respond to on my clipboard, but then it doesn't overwrite it when next I try to copy something else. Indeed, if I try to copy the whole post, I often get it twice. For example, I just went to this post, tried to copy the last line of it, pressed Ctrl+V, and got this:
quote: You can see that the line I actually tried to copy was stuck on the front of the whole post which I didn't try to copy and didn't want to. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Replaced the [indent] and [code]code with [quote] code to get rid of the way overlong lines of text which were causing the page display to be way overwide.

Yes, I agree with that. Clicking on "peek" does it properly.
It should open in a new tab, not a new window.

This is a longstanding problem in a couple different browsers, FF for one. The two flavors, normal and peek, are represented in consecutive div's. They toggle with one being visible and the other hidden. If you select a little below the top or bottom you could select the hidden text, too.
I think I can use Javascript to add/remove the div's instead of using visible/hide, which should fix the problem. This is relatively simple, but I have a rather long list of small items on my todo list right now. It could take a few weeks. About the pop-up, I need to know more than you don't like it, plus there's another issue concerning pop-ups and tabs. Some browsers, IE I think, bring it up in a tab no matter what you do. Others provide varying degrees of user control over how pop-ups are handled. But I'll play with it some more and see how how much control I can provide to the user over how they're handled.

...more importantly, no scroll bar. Per Admins reply, that seems to be a Firefox quirk, but indeed an annoying quirk. The page-top announcement setup permits two types of announcements: 1) One that goes to a specific topic when clicked on. 2) One that opens a new window when clicked on. This type is used for announcements that don't have any connection to a single (as in 1) specific topic. I think this setup works well for most applications, but not the current example of a message that (currently) contains 7 links (1 to the forum rules, the rest to specific topics). My intent for that index announcement was to be an alternative to having the contained topics as "sticky" topics. I don't like "sticky" topics, especially if there are more that a couple. An alternative would be to have individual page top announcement (of the above type 1) for all 6 of the topics, that would jump directly to those topics. But that adds too much clutter to the page top. Bottom line (IMO) - Fix the scroll bar quirk, and live with the new window situation for the "Index to certain important topics" announcement. Compared to a sticky topic in the Announcements section I think this solution is pretty useless. I can see using this implementation of announcements for short term immediate messages like down times or new rules, but for something like this list a sticky topic in Announcements would work betterer...

About the pop-up, I need to know more than you don't like it ... Why? As a writer of software, what other end do you have in mind except gratifying the wishes of your users? I have Firefox set up so that if I click on anything it will open in a new tab, rather than in a new window. This is how I like it to be. You, along with people who wish me to pay money to see naked women or to play online poker, have managed to circumvent this clearly stated preference. I resent this.
