Adminnemooseus, in message 295, writes: Prepare for a new onslaught of Adminnemooseus complaints about worthless topic subtitles. The replied to message is an example of continuing to use a subtitle that no longer ties to the message theme. Ideally, the message subtitle should have become something like "The red "minus" icon denoting a suspended member". Adminnemooseus ps: I note that using the code still doesn't work when inside the opening [qs] code. I tried using it to make the "message 295" a clickable link.

I propose the option of controls that permit an individual member to post to an individual topic no more often than every X minutes. This would apply to all members equally. Offhand, I think X=15 minutes would be a good number.
This will prevent the rapid fire of short messages and encourage fewer but better messages. It would suppress topics being turned into chat lines. It might slow down run-away topics, giving members a chance to read what others are posting rather than just racing to post another reply. Of course, all kinds of option variations could be built in. ...more importantly, no scroll bar. Per Admins reply, that seems to be a Firefox quirk, but indeed an annoying quirk. The page-top announcement setup permits two types of announcements: 1) One that goes to a specific topic when clicked on. 2) One that opens a new window when clicked on. This type is used for announcements that don't have any connection to a single (as in 1) specific topic. I think this setup works well for most applications, but not the current example of a message that (currently) contains 7 links (1 to the forum rules, the rest to specific topics). My intent for that index announcement was to be an alternative to having the contained topics as "sticky" topics. I don't like "sticky" topics, especially if there are more that a couple. An alternative would be to have individual page top announcement (of the above type 1) for all 6 of the topics, that would jump directly to those topics. But that adds too much clutter to the page top. Bottom line (IMO) - Fix the scroll bar quirk, and live with the new window situation for the "Index to certain important topics" announcement. I also note (at least for Firefox) that left clicking on the new window announcement links opens them in a tab of the original window.

Is there any reason for read announcements to appear there at all? Why not simply include unread announcements, and then remove them when read? Often one of the purposes of the announcements is to include a link to one or more topics, to which you may wish to post to if you find some sort of problem. It serves to help one find those topics at a later time. - Thus it's good to keep the announcement available. There currently is discussion in "The Private Administration Forum", on getting the "Index to certain important topics" out of the announcements area. It's looking that it's going to end up there with "Profile", "FAQ", "Rules", etc. Adminnemooseus

I may be wrong, but I think it's something beyond incompetence on my part - The settings controls just don't seem to be working correctly.

I can't reproduce the problem, even with my flaky behaving Firefox 4.0 in Windows 7.
I guess you need to give Percy/Admin specific info on what browser, etc. Will try an edit on this message. Adminnemooseus Added by edit is added by edit. Nope, still not reproducing the problem. Will try turning on "signature". Still nothing found - Turn "signature" back off. Trying edit using IE 9.0.8112.16421 in Windows 7. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : No reason given. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : No problem found here. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Turn on "signature". Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Turn off signature. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Edit test w/ IE.

OK, I can reproduce the quirk via IE 9.0.8112.16421 in Windows 7, which I never otherwise use at evcforum.net.
Adminnemooseus Added by edit (w/ Firefox): dwise1 has a message here, which has a load of html in it. Something in that message causes the page to be quite overwide. I PM'ed him about him trying to fix the overwide situation. He did some sort of edit at that page. Seemingly, that is when the edit quirk first started showing up. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : See above.

We're now into stage 4 of Percy's ongoing experiments in creating, finding, and fixing computer coding errors and other software deficiencies.
Thus, "report coding bugs" had a new home - dBoard 4.0 Release. If you are using Internet Explorer 6, please instead go here. Version 3 is hereby closed. Adminnemooseus ps: The "Essential Links" have been updated to now go to the version 4.0 topic. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Edit after finding out message ID number. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : ps. Please be familiar with the various topics and other links in the "Essential Links", found in the top of the page menu. Amongst other things, this is where to find where to report various forum problems. |
