Proof positive, to me anyway, that tradition sucks.
Might I ask what made this an issue for you all of a sudden? Surely you knew about circumcision. Are you suggesting that that is disgusting, or the tradition of sucking on the wound?
The fact that these kids got herpes is due to lack of health concerns, or assumed 0 health risk. But its not like ordinary circumcisions without the sucking are problem free... including death. Those within that religion were probably as upset as having had a regular doctor botch a job.
You may choose your religion on whatever criteria, and dislike whatever rituals, but I wasn't sure what tradition you were actually aiming at.

Re: Tradition sucks, get it?
I do not feel a need to circumise, or did Jesus.
Wasn't Jesus circumcized? I think he had to be at that time didn't he? He was a Jew and trying to be King of the Jews, so it would seem odd that he would not have been a recipient of that tradition.
The tradition of circumcision is most certainly in the Bible. From what little I know of scripture on circ, Paul speaks slightly for it and sometimes against it, but more against it because its boastful and prideful rather than overtly wrong. The Gospel of Thomas has Jesus deriding it as not useful. That would be neither prescribed nor proscribed activity.
Besides all that, I do not think sucking a babies bloody penis is a good idea at all, or do I know of any biblical references to it.
The sucking is with wine and meant to sterilize and anaesthetize the region. That was probably a good idea when they originally put it into practice (~100ad?) but obviously has a major flaw if the person sucking has a mouth full of disease.
That was not biblical, but practical. Merely the hacking apart of the genitals was biblical. And whether you think Jesus was right or not, if you do believe the Bible then God most certainly did command it. At least at some point God wanted foreskins. Maybe he sucked on them in heaven? I dunno.

Re: Tradition sucks, get it?
There is more too, but obviously it is not important to be circumcised anymore to in Christ. Being circumcised means zip, it is what is in your heart.
Thank you for posting the relevant passages which showed I was right. Did you not understand that I was saying circumcision means zip? Neither prescribed nor proscribed activity.
This does not change the fact that GOD at one point (before Jesus) certainly did ask people to be Circumcized. After Jesus it just doesn't seem to be necessary.
Just wonderful theology, no really. We should all follow your reasoning.
Okay, why don't you tell me why God wanted foreskins? I mean what does he need them for?

Re: Tradition sucks, get it?
First answer this question. Did God want foreskins, or did he want us not to have them?
Well it appears he wanted to have them. But I'm open for anything. Go ahead and explain it either way.

Re: First I've ever heard of it
Thats shocking! Thats the first that I've ever heard of the practice.
I'm still a bit mystified. How is the sucking any more shocking than the mutilation, which is really well known? I mean once you butcher someone's genitals, what's the difference if you suck on the wound in a ritual to cleanse it?

Re: Judaism out, let's add Christianity
Tradition doesn't suck. Culture doesn't suck. Failure to balance thinking and practice sucks. Failure to accept others sucks. Creating issues through intolerance sucks.
Yay.
Real fucking funny.
(Eyebrows shoot up) Note to RR: Your conduct had to be pretty outrageous to elicit such a response.
holmes, I may be using the word "culture" improperly here again. I can't remember a better word.
Actually your usage looked fine to me.
