minor nitpick for both you and asciiker: it was a chunk of insulating foam, not ice that caused the damage to the Challenger.

This article says that ice forms on the main tank because of the low temperature of the liquid hydrogen and oxygen within. I coudln't find anything that says ice forms on the solid boosters themselves.
