Giving the power to help others ... World Grid.
Part Two. The first one was maxed out at 300 messages.EvC Forum: HIV research - from wester to easter ... ? In this edition, we can discuss current research into HIV as well as provide a link to where people can help solve this problem.
Simply donate the time your computer is turned on, but would normally lie idle, for projects that benefit humanity. Like a screensaver, grid technology is easy to use, safe and free. When you are ready to use your computer, the grid software will shut itself off until the next time your computer is idle. To learn more, click on Become a Member. Or to start volunteering your PC time now, click the button below. On our first anniversary, we are pleased to announce the launch of our second project: FightAIDS@Home. This project has the potential to stop AIDS, perhaps the most devastating disease of our time. If you are not already a member of World Community Grid and want to donate your computer time for this project, please click on the join now button on the right. More info (if you need it) at:../projects_showcase/viewResearch.do To join go toWorld Community Grid After you join as a member, join our team by selecting "join a team" and then go to {T section page 3} to pick "Team EvC" to join ("Team" is part of the team name, so we are the Team EvC Team). Enjoy.{abe} It appears that the BOINC agent may be easier on the computer (disturbs other activity less) and is more productive than the standard UD agent and can run on older slower computers that the UD agent cannot use. I don't know how to set this up other than to (a) run the worldcommunitygrid download on one machine to sign up, (b) download the BOINC agent and assign it to worldcommunitygrid.org and then (c) uninstalling the worldcommunitygrid download (so you don't have both agents running), (d) repeat (b) for any other machines once you have a valid sign-up to attach it with. To download the BOINC agent go toWorld Community Grid If you want to just us the standard UD agent then you should use the throttle or you will probably see jerky mouse behavior: New trottle tool and default setting at 60% - newsletter article:
Enhance your preferences with the Throttle Tool
{/abe}When running World Community Grid's agent for Windows, you will now see that 100% of the CPU is not used by default. World Community Grid has introduced a default setting of 60%. We've found that some recently designed computers deal with slight increases in CPU temperature (such as those caused by running at higher utilization) by slowing the CPU rather than speeding up the cooling fan as needed. This could cause a computer to run slower than usual. To keep this from happening, World Community Grid decided to reduce the grid agent's default CPU throttle setting so that the CPU does not heat up significantly. If you wish to change the CPU utilization setting, we provide a downloadable tool to do this. (This throttle feature is not yet available for the BOINC based agents.) AIDS Origin Traced to Chimp Group in Cameroon, (National Geographic Article):
Chimpanzees living in dense jungles in Africa have been confirmed as the probable source of the HIV virus which caused the human AIDS pandemic. Researchers have identified simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) in wild apes for the first time. The virus, which at some point jumped to humans as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), has been found in chimpanzees in Cameroon, west-central Africa. The virus was found in chimpanzees in southeastern Cameroon, where SIV infection rates were as high as 35 percent in some chimp populations. Further genetic analysis linked these chimps to the source of the main strain of HIV-1, the most prevalent form of HIV. The team's findings are to be published tomorrow in the journal Science. The Cameroonian chimps showed a diversity of SIV strains, with some twice as similar to human HIV strains as any found in captive apes, says study team member Beatrice Hahn, a professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. "Two clusters [of SIV strains] were very closely related to human strains," she added. These human strains belong to the M group of HIV-1, the group which has spread among humans worldwide. Hunters in the region who caught and ate chimps were probably the first to contract HIV, she adds. Chimps in turn are thought to have picked up SIV by eating infected monkeys. Chimps, however, are the only apes known to be infected. "The chimp virus is a mosaic of viruses that infect prey monkeys," the University of Alabama's Hahn said. "Chimps had to eat these monkeys first but they have certainly had their infection a lot longer than humans." "As far as we know, the chimps don't get any type of AIDS-like disease," he said. "That's part of the reason for being very interested in the infection of chimps, because chimps and humans are very similar genetically." In other words we may find the best source of information on how to cure the disease in our genetic cousins. How does one explain that without evoution? Try checking the FAQs to see if this is already asked?
Can you assign users to one core? Then you could create two users with the different cores and try to run two -- if you get a message that it is already running then that would indicate it was using both. can't help you with the rest. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmericanOZen[Deist

keep the updates coming
Notice that there are now four "projects" Participate in All Projects Although the last is technically a continuation of the third. Cancer is added to the list, even more reason to participate eh? (now all I need to do is figure out how to BOINC my machines) we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmericanOZen[Deist

To download the BOINC agent go to
World Community Grid My installation crashed, probably due to not using passwords for users? sigh. As a plus they now support MAC and LINUX on all projects. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmericanOZen[Deist

My impression was that BOINC was insisting on a login with password for user on the machine -- I don't use a password so it got confused

Found the problem was some corroded spring contacts (copper spring hitting against aluminum ground plate, in a warm, moist salty air environment?), particularly where the wireless card slot was powered ... so I may need to hard wire them. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmericanOZen[Deist

I'll have to watch for that
I also found this:
World Community Grid - View Thread - Boinc Agent? There are still benefits to the BOINC package, even if only crunching WCG. It can stack jobs to run later ... without the extra need for UDMonitor. You can be uploading/downloading while the current workunit is running. The UD interface must finish the upload, download another and run a benchmark before the current workunit starts. One of my computers is old, and falls below the UD requirements. It can still run WCG projects in BOINC. bold for emPHAsis we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmericanOZen[Deist

now on boinc: note turned off the UD agent that was running while installing boinc
single processor, fairly long track record on UD agent, so should be good comparison on results returned. Here's my totals "benchmark" data:Totals: Of these the "Avg. Results Per Calendar Day 1.62451" is the critical one. Here's my single device benchmarks
Where "IT" & "Desky" are my home computer (rebuilt once) and "Thoreau" is the work one. These run continuosly. The laptops have intermittent use and data would not be as reliable, although I will try boinc on one to see if it has less problems with it. I will need to migrate my work machine on friday -- taking tomorrow off for a short 58 mile bike ride ... in the middle of a heat wave??? -- provided that I can use it with boinc and not have the performance issues I've had with UD that mean I have to throttle it down to 30% to do my WORK. (such problems eh?) Enjoy. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmericanOZen[Deist

I strongly advise using throttles on laptops to prevent overheating.
without BOINC: from bob_grays link Message 235 - For Windows/XP Open the Control Panel from within My Computer, and then open "System" within the "Performance and Maintenance" category . Click on the "Advanced" tab in "System Properties" and then click on "Environment Variables". Under "User variables for..." click on "New." Type in "wcgrid_max_cpu" (without the quote marks) as the "Variable Name". In the "Variable Value" field enter the desired CPU throttle percentage as an integer form 25 to 100. Any other values will be considered as 100%. Do not put the "%" character in the "Variable Value" field. Then click "OK". Click "OK" on the "Environment Variables" window. Click "OK" on the "System Properties" window. Repeat this setting for each user ID logging into your system, which runs the World Community Grid agent. Alternatively, the "System Variable" instead of "User variable...": can be set, which will enable this setting for all users. with BOINC? I seem to recall being able to set max cpu and max hard-drive use at installation, but can't find any way to modify it. anyone know where that is? I found where I saw it -- in the device manager on the World Community Grid device preferences:
World Community Grid Advanced Options But when I look at Task Manager Processes it's at 100%. At least with BOINC it doesn't seem to surge up and down the way the other grid agent does, and seems to interfere less with usage as a result (had a real problem with a graphics program at work with the mouse stopping and starting as you are trying to draw things). We'll see how it goes. On another note, it seems that both agents are reporting results - BOINC and UD? Do you need to have the UD agent installed to run the grid on BOINC?
