Re: Batman Begins
I thought Gary Oldman was amazing as pre-commissioner Gordon. Stole the movie, in my opinion. Bale's psycho-ass Batman delivery really sold it for me, too.

Re: Batman Begins
I liked it, my 16 year old liked it. Good enough for me.
I watched it in IMAX which added to it in many ways. However, the directorial choice to be very in close to the fighting scenes just produced confusion which is, I think, realistic in a fight but not so good in this movie.

Re: Batman Begins
Ned - I agree with your assessment of the fights - I think that's due to the stiffness of the costume? trying to cover that up?

Re: Batman Begins
Yes, maybe.
This director doesn't do action movies much I don't think.
Maybe they wanted to emphasize the ninja stuff and give you more of a feel than an image.

It seems that you favor a certain writer/director.
I have seen Amelie, and recommend it as well. Unfortunately, I didn't get out to see A Very Long Engagement as I had intended when it was playing here.
I had never heard of Delicatessen before, but I suspected that you had some sort of theme going and looked it up. However, after reading a couple of reviews, I might pass on that one.
Cheers.

Primer
I just saw the movie Primer last night and it is one fantastic movie. I don't want to give the plot away but I will say that you may need to watch it about 4 times to get your mind around the story. Fortunately, it is a one week rental at Blockbuster.
Anyway, here is the website for those interested:
http://primermovie.com/
To quote Dan: "See it if you have any respect for yourself as a person whatsoever."

Re: Batman Begins

i agree. having worked at a video store at some point, i've come to the conclusion that most hollywood "actors" don't really act -- that is play parts. they play themselves. so if you want a tom-cruis-like character, you get tom cruise. if you want a jack-black-like character, you get jack black. it's much easier to keep a list of people who DO act than people who don't.
and gary oldman just got pushed to the top of my list. mostly because i didn't even realize it was him until the end of the movie.
Bale's psycho-ass Batman delivery really sold it for me, too.
when i saw a promo on tv, it had him speaking with a really gruff voice, and it didn't work at all. but in the contect of the movie, it worked so well i was suprised. the trailers and promos don't really represent this movie very well.
it was far, far better than i expected. i'm gonna go see it again soon, actually. i'm glad they started over, because this blows tim burton's batman movies (you know, the only good ones) away.
i'm curious to see who they cast as the villian in the next one.

war of the worlds
I'm keeping an open mind about "War of the Worlds," even if it does feature Tom Cruise.
anyone see it yet? the paper gave it a good review. i'm sort of excited to see it in "oh no, not another tom cruise movie with steven speilberg and special effects as costars!" kind of way.
i just wanna know how bad they ruin a classic.

Absolutely. Here is a short list of actors that come immediately to mind who, in my opinion, can act--when they put their minds to it:
Robert DeNiro
Jodie Foster
Robin Williams (!)
Emily Watson
Geoffrey Rush
Bjork
Johnny Depp
Any arguments? Additions?

Re: war of the worlds
Yeah, I just saw it. I give it two thumbs down.
If you want to see Tom Cruise run away from aliens while everyone else dies for 2 hours, highly recommended.

Speilberg's adaptation is almost completely faithful, at the beginning and end anyway where Morgan Freeman actually reads from the story.
The problem is that it's an absolutely faithful classic alien-invasion movie. Which has been done to death. I really, really was hoping for something original, especially after Independance Day became the quintessential alien disaster movie.
I had really low expectations and they managed to come right in underneath them. Amazing. I was so bored.

If no one has had the chance to see either Sometimes in April or Hotel Rwanda I recommend the former (despite being a Don Cheadle fan). Obviously heavy material, but Sometimes in April was put together a little better.
Thumbs up for
Batman Begins
Sky Captain
Anyone like Sin City? I thought it was great, but.....

Identity
Rented "Identity" (John Cuzak).
Interesting, if bloody, murder mystery kind of odd ball unusual thing. Fun to try to figure it out.
