Re: war of the worlds
well...I enjoyed the movie.
The problem is that it's an absolutely faithful classic alien-invasion movie
true.
especially after Independance Day became the quintessential alien disaster movie.
This movie reminded me of Ind. Day. I liked both movies. Please note that it doesn't take much for me to enjoy a movie.
WotW's was more in-depth than Ind Day, IIRC. Tom and Dakota did good jobs as actors. There were some emotional seens and some crazy special effects scenes. All in all, I had fun in the theater.
Amazing. I was so bored.
I liked it. I'm easily amused when it comes to movies. I never expect too much and always go open minded. I had a good time watching this movie.
I was gettin drunk thoughout the movie and had some trouble understanding the ending...If someone who seen it could help me...
It seemed that evolution saved the human race. The aliens failed because they were severly affected by the things that don't affect us at all because we've co-existed with them far so long.
I dunno, is that staement accurate? Keep in mind that I'm trying to not spoil the movie.
edited some grammatical errors due to drunkedness

Personally, I can't wait to see War of the Worlds. I love Spielberg movies. I even liked 'AI' (and somehow consider it one of my favorite movies) which everyone i knew seemed to hate. I am also one of those easily entertained movie-goers

Well, see, I am too; it doesn't take much for even a really bad movie to entertain me. But WoW just had nothing that appealed to me. Hey, your milage may vary, and did, I guess. Glad to hear. My wife even loved it. Just didn't do anything for me.

Re: Identity
Saw that one. I liked it. They were pretty clever about it.
By clever I mean:
1) There are suspense/murder movies that have to specifically make an effort to mislead you so that you can't figure it out....
2) Then there are movies that are written well: they show you the possibilities but rely on the watcher making wrong assumptions to keep the secret a little bit longer. The reward is if you don't assume things too quickly you will figure out "whodunit" before the rest of the audience.
Probably why I'm a fan of Michael Slade.

Re: Primer
Here is a nice description I found from the Flick Filosopher (I generally like her reviews):
In a suburban garage and with parts scavenged from Wal-Mart and from around the house, engineers Aaron (Shane Carruth) and Abe (David Sullivan) invent a device that hums ominously and appears to futz with the spacetime continuum. So they fiddle around with it, thinking they've got all the angles covered -- the grandpa paradox and the like. They don't.

Re: war of the worlds
Morgan Freeman actually reads from the story.
dear god.
similarly, if you saw "mr. and mrs. smith" one of the characters was wearing a "fight club" t-shirt. in a scene with brad pitt.

If you want to see Tom Cruise run away from aliens while everyone else dies for 2 hours, highly recommended.
damn, i was hoping for the reverse.

I never saw the original War of the Worlds, so I have a question.
Was that basement scene in there, with that eye-tentacle thing somehow not realizing there are people down there? I just hate scenes like that in movies. I mean, "Look behind the f****** mirror!"

basement tentacle
Yes, there is such a scene in the original 1953 version (I have it on DVD).
For the record:
1) I am not a great movie critic -- I like a lot of stuff that isn't great.
2) Whatever, I really liked the new WotW. I thought it was dammed well done for a redoing and is surprisingly in line with the old movie.

basement tentacle, SF movies
It seems to me that there was a tentacle "scene" in the original Wells story as well--but it has been quite a while since I read the story and my memory is apt to fail me.
I tend to be critical of movies in general, and SF movies in particular, so after reading the posts here I will probably not waste my money on WotW.
On more than one occasion I have read a good SF story, later saw the movie on which the film was supposedly based, and wondered where the story went? The elements that made the story such a great read were replaced by special effects and fight scenes. So what is the point? Enemy Mine is an example of this. I was a bit pissed (angry, not drunk) after coming out of that movie.
Contact is, in my opinion, a good standard for SF movies. It seemed to me to be faithful to the source.
LotR has set the standard for fantasy, IMO. I am hoping that future theatrical ventures into that genre hold the same respect for the source material.

WotW direct to DVD
I knew it when I rented it but was curious: the Assylum produced DVD of WotW rushed out to coincide with the release of Speilburg's WotW is AWFUL!!!!
Do not rent it! The acting isn't very good, the directing is worse, the writing worse than that and the special effects are not as good as the 1953 movie.
However, the previews on the DVD suggest that this is better than others Assylum has produced.

contact

while i really like this movie, it's not exactly faithful to the source. for instance, i think ellie's mother is still alive in the book. there are 5 or 6 travellers in a SMALL unimpressive machine, and their stories corroborate each other, not just one. palmer is also a tatooed ex-circus freak turned raving preacher, and i don't think he's a love interest (i could be wrong, been a while)
and most importantly, it ends completely differently. there's some weird essoteric stuff about pi in base 11 or something.
but i think that's ok, really. some degree of change is a good thing.

did they do "curse of the komodo?" i love that one. bad movies are awesome.
speaking of bad movies, skip "a sound of thunder." i know it's ray bradbury. that's why i went to see it. but it was awful.
