I'm a Locke, Paine, Hobbes kinda guy. In short, government is a really really scary thing, though necessary. And we need to be very careful not to let it turn on us. In the US, I don't see any of the major parties doing a very good job of sticking to my principles; so I don't have a party affiliation.
